Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I left home at 16 to go to the racing college in Newmarket after a difficult childhood I needed a job that would have accommodation and I had always loved horses but never been given the opportunity to have anything to do with them as a child, I started working on a yard in early 2020 and was there for nearly 3 years before moving to Norfolk. I therefore have a lot of equestrian experience having lived and breathed racing, living on site as well. I can plait and turn out to a high standard and have a level 2 diploma in work based specialist racehorse care. I ended up towards the end of my time in Newmarket, working on the company’s stud and rehabilitation yard, where I assisted breaking in yearlings and I was often in sole charge of the yard of 10-16 horses, administering medication and following exercise plans, along with all other yard work. I worked on the ground through out my time there, however I can ride well, and worked at a riding school before racing. I now ride an Arab endurance horse regularly.
Of course no one knows everything, and I’m really keen to keep learning more and taking on new challenges.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I’m very happy working alone or with others, in my current team larder role it’s all about team work, and in other roles I’ve had there’s been a big focus on working alone.
I’m a quick learner and love a challenge!
I used to very regularly prepare horses for the races, ensuring they looked their best, I’m good at plaiting, quarter marks etc.
I’m a very responsible person, having cared for so many different animals all my life, I see them all as individuals and care deeply about their welfare.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses
They always bring a smile to my face no matter how I’m feeling, there’s something about working outside with such beautiful animals that is so special.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would love to learn to clip and any other new skills specifically relating to the job.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I have had a lot of responsibility all my life and I care about every job I do, I care about the animals and the people I work with and I care deeply about doing a good job. This makes me a very reliable, responsible person..
I’m very sociable and get on with everyone, human or animal!
I take a lot of pride in what I do and have a very strong work ethic.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
Preferably a full time position that has variety and maybe different animals to look after, I absolutely love dogs too!
I really want to learn as much as possible about different equine disaplines as I’ve only really got racing experience.
• Do you need accommodation?
No
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
I do have a whippet called Elvis and in an ideal world I would love to be able to bring him with me, at least sometimes.
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
No
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
I have various holidays booked up until the end of March 2025 as I have to book it a year ahead in my current role. My nearest one is 15th-23rd September
