Experience with Horses

I have over 25 years of equine experience in both western and english style riding. I have worked with green broke to finished horses, lots of off the track thoroughbreds and high level jumpers, as well as chuckwagon horses, reigning horses, roping and barrel horses. I myself have owned and competed in both jumping (2’6-2’9) and rodeo events (roping, barrel racing and pole bending) and can confidently harness and hook horses for driving. I have previous barn managerial experience and working with farriers and vets. Most recently, I just finished my second summer working for a chuckwagon driver as a barn hand. Previously I was a part of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association during my 4 years of post secondary, I spent 6 months working at a guest ranch and guiding horse back tours in the Canadian rocky mountains, and have 5 years experience behind the scenes in the light horse, draft horse and chuckwagon equine barns at the Calgary Stampede.

I am very organized, and strive in a fast paced environment. I excel in both leading and following type job roles. I am fast and efficient at mucking out stalls, organizing feed schedules, mixing feed and harrowing riding arenas. I can run equipment and think of myself as a decent handyman. I am easygoing and have a great sense of humour and attitude. I am not afraid of early morning or long days of work and I like to have fun while doing my job!

I am looking for and open to both riding and non riding jobs, preferably with an option to live on site or have some type of accommodation as I am coming from overseas.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Their personalities. I love how diverse and quirky each and every horse is. I have always owned and ridden horses for as long as I can remember and just being around them is grounding. I love the challenge and the excitement of seeing them succeed and learn alongside their rider. I also love the thrill of riding and competition.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

There is always something to learn and improve on. I love learning and developing new skills and tricks and knowledge from anyone willing to teach me. Even though I have been riding for 20 plus years, I know that I have so much room for improvement. At the moment I would really like to improve my flat work riding english. I know that I get a bit lazy riding in a western saddle and would really like to focus on my riding and leg work.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I am hard working and I care about the work that I do. I learn from my mistakes and strive for the best, whether that is cleaning a barn, organizing tack and feed or yard work. I think that I bring a fun new outlook and a different experience to the job. I am really excited about being overseas and I want to prove that I can succeed in a new environment. If you can get past my accent and confusion for British slang, I know that I will be a great fit for any team!

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

I would really like a groom or barn/ yard hand job with some riding if possible. I am really hoping to gain some more experience in the riding world and see how it is done in the UK compared to Canada.

• Do you need accommodation?

Yes, I would really appreciate accommodation as I am coming from overseas.

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

No

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

No

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?

No. My Visa is for 2 years, though I would like to do some traveling in that time, I do not have anything planned any time soon.
