Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have many different types of yards within the industry. My first was a riding school where I learnt the basics in management and handling. I then worked on a dealing yard which gave me more riding and handling experience working with new horses all the time, all different sizes, ages, temperaments etc. After that I worked at a rescue/livery yard which taught me lots about welfare and how individual each horses needs are. After my GCSEs I began my Level 3 Extended Diploma in Equine Management at Moreton Morrell College. College has particularly benefitted my riding abilities from the range of horses and coaches we have. It is also where I was taught BHS safety practices and specialist skills like clipping, plaiting, pulling manes etc. During my time at college I have competed one work experience placement at a riding school/trekking yard which particularly improved my customer service skills and ability to work under time pressure, this yard was the biggest I had been on so the scale of my job was very new to me but I adapted well. I am currently in my second year of the college course and am completing my second work experience placement at Hughes Dressage which I am loving and is helping me to have more specific experience related to competition grooming. This should also give me experience handling stallions. By my earliest starting date I will have obtained my diploma.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I have very good attention to detail and like all my work to be up to a high standard. I come prepared and organised to help the work flow stay smooth. I work well under pressure and can work solo or as a team. I am quite good and handling and riding nervous horses as I stay calm and communicate that energy to them.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

How unlike any other job it is. I like how hands on and outdoorsy it is. Horses are the most rewarding animals to work with and they are so intelligent and they can teach us so much too. Horsemanship proves actions speak louder than words and we have to build a relationship with them based on trust, nothing else first.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like be able to put the practical and theory skills I have gained from my college course into practice and enjoy being to continue improving the skills sets required and learning about being a competition groom.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I take a lot of pride in my work, I always aim to learn and continue to grow and will work hard and stay determined even when I get something wrong. I put my heart into everything I do.
