Experience with Horses

I’ve worked with horses for 16 years and have completed a Level 2 Equine Apprenticeship (Equivalent to a BHS Stage 2 Certificate) on a large livery yard of 53 horses. I have worked and managed day to day running on 4* and a 5* eventing yards and worked with young and troubled horses to break in, school and retrain them. I was also an assistant head groom on a full livery yard that hosts a wide range of affiliated and unaffiliated shows all year round.

I have schooled youngsters and newly broken stallions and have experience in competing in dressage to novice level, show jumping to 1.10m (I have schooled over 1.30m) and eventing at BE100 (schooled over 1.10m cross country fences).

Key Skills

I am currently reading Business Management BSc and am on track for a 1st classification. Since April 2022 I have held a customer assistant position, floor leading on a regular basis. I have also aided in bookkeeping duties and completing online orders during this time. As such, I am very knowledgeable and experienced in business practises and management of staff and clients.

I have worked alone on a 4* yard and in a team on a multitude of yards and am comfortable and confident in both atmospheres although I do prefer to work with a team, remaining calm and focused in stressful situations. I enjoy helping youngsters to develop over time but, as well as that, I enjoy working with stallions both on the ground and riding and use methods to encourage horses to enjoy working and develop naturally. I complete general yard duties to a high standard, always keeping work areas clean and safe. I also have experience handling a wide range of horses from fit eventers to excitable young stock and am confident with difficult and troubled horses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

While I enjoy working with horses and aiding in their care and development, I also have strengths of business and management knowledge obtained through my undergraduate degree. Therefore, I am knowledgeable of improving business efficiencies and motivating and retaining staff, a topic area of my dissertation. Developing and improving the mentally and physically aspects of myself and staff, as well as helping yards to improve is something that I take great pride in contributing to. I also complete all of my tasks to a high standard and take pride in my work, often searching for something else to do or find someway to help out the team I am on if I have time and resources available.

My main weakness is that I can get too attached to extra tasks given to me and I can sometimes over work myself or work beyond stated hours until I think that my work is good enough; I don’t compromise my other jobs and my main duties will always be completed on time.

I am a dedicated and loyal employee who always wants to improve, be that as a person, manager or the places that I am working in. I take great pride in not only my own work but my team’s work as well, knowing that even something as simple as keeping moral high can aid motivation and productivity.

Requirements

I am currently a student at the University of Buckingham and set to finish by degree on 15th September 2023, however, I am currently only in university once (perhaps twice) per week until this date. I would much prefer to live onsite and have a 16.3hh gelding who is very well behaved and normally a yard favourite and would require accommodation for him.
