Experience with Horses

My equestrian experience is extensive. I have been riding now for 30 years across a variety of disciplines, including: dressage; polo exercising; showing; hunting; backing and riding away rescued equines; rehabilitation from injury; schooling equines with behavioural issues; trick training and stunt riding. I have worked with rescued equines of all shapes, sizes, temperaments and backgrounds, successfully rehoming many. I have worked as a sole charge groom and managed a yard owning 70 equines, including mules and donkeys as well as horses and ponies. Most recently, I have worked as an equine welfare manager for film and television horses.

As equine welfare manager I was responsible for the development and delivery of training, exercise and nutrition regimes for up to fifty horses, ponies and donkeys, both on-set and in preparation for filming. This included ensuring all equines are at peak physical and mental fitness for long and challenging periods of filming. I provided equine capability knowledge to directors and producers (who generally have no equestrian background.) My equine first aid experience includes administration of IM antibiotics, assessing lameness, delivering pain relief and bandaging.. I am capable of providing full equine risk assessments prior to horse work and was responsible for teaching actors of all ages and capabilities to ride. I am capable of managing people as well as staff, recently responsible for managing, training and recruiting a team of up to twenty staff including induction training, managing pay and controlling staff budgets.

I enjoy the opportunity to get stuck in with the animals I love, whether it be riding, turning out to a high standard, improving welfare or schooling to improve challenging behaviour. I love the fact that every day is different and to be successful, you must be flexible and hard-working. I am a perfectionist in everything I do and expect those around me to work to the same standard – perhaps this is sometimes a weakness!

I am based in Scotland but I am flexible on location. If located further than 20 miles from Glasgow, I would need accommodation.
