Experience with Horses

I have over 20 years of riding experience and have previously competed in Equitation, Hunters, and Jumper Classes and currently compete in Jumpers. I have previously owned horses for 11 years and have experience training greener ponies and bringing horses back into work after injury. I also have over 5 years of experience working in the Equine industry and am capable to work both in a team and as sole charge and have experience assisting with the management of barns when owners and barn managers are away. Alongside the knowledge from my degree in Equine Science from Hartpury University, my experience with horses has given me the ability to be able to assist vets, chiropractors, and farriers; to administer equine first aid such as administering medications including injections, poulticing, bandaging, and dealing with specific ailments such as Cushing’s, Cellulitis, Lameness, Colic, etc.  I have experience teaching beginners and amateurs in Equitation, Hunters/Jumpers, and IEA (interscholastic) disciplines as well as schooling and training horses for clients, riding schools, and warm-ups for shows. Alongside teaching and other general yard duties in previous roles, I have also acted as a groom for the riding schools and am proficient in grooming, tacking up/down, bathing, clipping, braiding with yarn, packing the trailer, trailering, warming up and schooling horses, organising riders and horses for classes as well as coaching some riders. I also have a lot of experience with camp counselling for riding camps and have previous experience performing pony rides for children with intellectual disabilities.

Key Skills

Turning out for shows, show prep, braiding/plaiting with yarn, clipping, mane pulling, working with others, sole charge, schooling & riding, training, bandaging, equine first aid, teaching beginners and amateurs lessons on and off the horse, lunging, working riding camps, administering medicine, injections, poulticing, tack cleaning, assisting vet/chiropractor etc.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I enjoy being able to have an active job and that the environment can constantly challenge you and teach you more; there’s always room for growth and improvement so it doesn’t feel stagnant. When teaching I enjoy seeing the improvement in riders and their growing confidence. Similarly, when riding there’s always something to work on and improve and it is really rewarding when you and your horse are able to work cohesively as a team to accomplish the task you’re working towards. It’s also really rewarding knowing you are doing your best to provide the best environment for the animals you are working with and it’s always fun working with horses because of their different personalities they always keep you on your toes.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

Having worked at two similar yards in terms of the programs I would like to expand and gain more experience elsewhere as University has further provided me with the knowledge and ability to expand my skill set yet I want to be able to utilize it further and continue to grow.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

I’m looking to have a job and work environment I enjoy being in where I can continue to be challenged and expand my knowledge, skill set and experience.

• Do you need accommodation?

NO

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

NO; however I would be relocating with my two dogs.

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
