Experience with Horses
I have been around horses since I was 5 or 6 years old, competing locally in showjumping competitions and pony club. I got into racing age 16 and spent a summer as a student at Richard Brabazon’s pre-training yard on the Curragh, Kildare in 2019. Here I worked as part of a small team to care for and exercise a yard of young racehorses and horses returning to training from injury. I Attended CAFRE college 2018-2020 where I completed a Level 3 Extended Technical Diploma and finished with a top grade, as well as being awarded a bursary from Down Royal Racecourse. Here I got the chance to ride the college’s p2p horses.
After finishing at college I returned to the Curragh to work full time for Richard Brabazon. I spent the majority of my time in this role assisting the head girl with breaking the yearlings and really enjoyed seeing how they progressed. With it being such a small team, and being one of only 3 full time staff, I was left in sole-charge quite often, and learned that I am quite capable working both on my own and in a team environment.
After finishing the season at Brabazon’s, I started working for Willie McCreery full time as a rider. Here I progressed as a rider and enjoyed getting the chance to go racing 2-3 times a week. Here I worked as part of a team to deliver all usual day-to-day care of the horses in training, and also undertook other tasks such as clipping. I worked here from May 2021-September 2022.
Having decided I wanted to experience working for one of the bigger operations in racing, I began working for Donnacha O’Brien as a full-time rider from September 2022-September 2023. Here I was responsible for usual day-to-day care of the horses in training and riding out.
I am currently studying International Horseracing Business at Hartpury University.
Key Skills
I am able to work well both in a team environment and on my own. I can work off of my own initiative but I am also able to take instructions when they are given. I can turn horses out for competition/racing to a good standard and plait well. I have a particular interest in young horses and enjoy working with them, even the slightly more challenging ones! I am reliable, punctual and eager to learn. Can ride, turn out horses to a good standard, plait, have some experience clipping, happy to go racing, and can do all normal yard duties.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- I am self motivated, I enjoy the challenge that comes with working with horses, especially breakers, and seeing the end result of hard work that has paid off.
- I am very patient, and I’m able to adapt when things don’t go to plan. I work well under pressure, and I’m able to stay calm in tricky situations.
- I would love to learn more and gain more experience, whether that be working with foals, yearling prep, swimming horses, etc.
Requirements
I am currently studying at university, so would require a bit of flexibility around lectures.
