Experience with Horses

I have been around horses for the majority of my life, working with them for several years.

I have been on lots of yards from the moment I was able to, mucking out and doing general yard duties as well as ridden work.

My work mainly started to take off when I went away from home for a couple weeks for work experience, to be completed for my equine college course. I decided to go to a Spanish Dressage Stud Yard, I learnt a lot about the differences in dressage as well as spending the day doing yard duties, tacking horses up and dealing with a lot of stallions and youngsters which I hadn’t done much until then.

I left college with a Distinction* and got into my chosen universities, although I decided not to go due to me being more hands on and wanting to make a name for myself in the industry.

My main equine job has been working on a busy, well run polo yard in Cheshire. We had almost 30 horses on the yard, the majority lived out through summer and some were stabled throughout due to injuries etc. I took on the role of head groom after our other member of staff left, to which left me with all the responsibilities and I believe I handled it really well.

My job role was exceptionally varied, on weekends during the season we would travel to the polo club for tournaments, where we would often take upwards of 14 horses. I was usually on a tight schedule and managed to groom, tack up and bandage the horses, often just shy of an hour. It was not easy but doable!

My job role in short www doing yard checks and yard upkeep. Checking the horses, bringing in, grooming, tacking up, bandaging, dealing with youngsters and high-strung horses, working under pressure, traveling horses, clipping, managing other part time staff members, dealing with clients etc.

After leaving polo due to wanting to broaden my experience, I went to a well run, competition yard. I moved away from home to work here for a little while. Due to the time of year they were working mainly in showjumping and slowed down on the eventing. The yard was split into two and whatever side I was on, I had to solely manage those horses, usually around 10-12. There was strict time keeping in which the yard jobs had to be done of a morning before starting to exercise all the horses.

I had to look back on what the horses had done for other days during the week and decide what they would do that day. Ranging from lungeing, long reining, hacking, schooling, poles and jumping. The horses turnout ended so most of the horses were very fresh so that was a challenge in itself but was always controlled to a high standard.
We had 2 colts that started the breaking process which I was included in, that was a good experience. I helped with general handling and groundwork, mainly lungeing as well as helping with the next steps of getting a rider on their back.

On competition days, the horses had to be to a specific standard, bathing would be done the day before, they had to have specific rugs, headcollars, all horses had travel bandages on, tail bandages etc. the box would be loaded with everything needed and more.
Sometimes the horses would have different times in the ring at complete opposite times of the day, so I had to be aware of these times, who was going and who was coming back at different times in the day.

I left this job due to the distance from home.

Key Skills

I am good at working in a team or alone and manage to fit into whatever situation I need to.
My strong point at the moment due to being in polo would be bandaging and tacking up.

I am confident and understanding when dealing with youngsters.

My riding ability and confidence in that aspect is another skill I am proud of.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

How rewarding they are. From them changing in behaviour themselves, from working with them over a certain amount of time. Or just how they’re an escape from reality, even if my reality is working and seeing them all day everyday, there’s something so refreshing about their presence.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I haven’t done much normal schooling in a while, as that isn’t done in polo due to riding with one hand.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I believe as well as being qualified and able to do a job. It’s important for someone to be kind and understanding, compassionate towards horses. I won’t claim to love horses more than anyone else but they are my world and I would do anything for them, if I was looking for staff, that would be my main priority.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

I would love to do more ridden work, showjumping is where my heart is and I’d love to do more with that, riding more youngsters and helping their training as well as other ‘made’ horses.

• Do you need accommodation?

Yes, due to how far away I am

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

I would love to bring my youngster with me. She’s my project all rounder.
This is not a necessity as she is a project to sell on but it would be nice to keep her for longer.

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

I plan to finish working in polo when another job opportunity is available, so no.

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?

No, I don’t
