We are a growing farm near Guildford operating as a charity that rescues and rehabilitates abused, abandoned and old horses, integrating them with the local community. We are seeking a groom who is reliable, trustworthy, hardworking and physically fit as an addition to our team. We currently have 37 horses on site, living out in a track and field system of 68 acres. You must be flexible and with a willingness to learn as we have an unconventional approach to horse care using a method of gentle calm and trust – you will receive guidance in this method of rehabilitation which not only enhances the recovery of the horses themselves; but helps to provide a healing environment for visitors to the Sanctuary. You must be a good team member, able to work alone on site or with the horses, as well as within a team of other staff and volunteers.
This is a really exciting opportunity for a groom to work in an environment where emotionally and/or physically damaged horses are given care and attention; enabling them in turn to offer support and relief to visiting adults and children, including those who are poorly or with additional needs – an interaction that you may be required to facilitate. We do not ride our horses at Mane Chance; instead we use natural and intuitive practices to allow the horses to recover from their trauma and build a relationship of trust. We also do not use conventional methods so a willingness to learn and implement new ideas is paramount and hopefully exciting for our successful candidate.
This is a full time role, involving some weekend working. You must have a full, valid driving licence and you should have your own car as we are a little out of the way; we will also need to complete a DBS check on the successful applicant for safeguarding purposes.
You should have proven experience of working with horses with a non-dominant approach, understanding the animal as an individual, rather than a tool!
You must also be able to embrace working for a charity with volunteers and events (which is different to more conventional equine roles) as this brings a really enjoyable element to the role but can also present its own challenges – you do need to be a people person too!
This position comes with on-site accommodation, shared with another member of staff. You will have your own bedroom/lounge and own bathroom. There is a shared kitchen. Parking is available. You will be required to contribute to utility costs only.
