Buckinghamshire, nr Princes Risborough – Equine Trainer 483 views1 application

Ref: JL89312

We are looking for a hard-working and motivated team player to join the Knowledge & Skills team at The Horse Trust to cover our Equine Trainer’s maternity leave. This role would suit a positive individual who has a wide range of experience handling and training horses and has strong effective coaching skills.

As the Equine Trainer you will provide a high standard of training and welfare to the equines under your care, working under the supervision of the Director of Training. You will assess and devise individual training programmes for horses that have not previously been handled as well as re-training horses that are performing unwanted behaviours and preparing horses for rehoming. You must be able to identify these unwanted behaviours and competently develop and implement appropriate re-training programmes. This will include carrying out a range of training and retraining techniques both from the ground and under saddle or harness, in conjunction with our specialist team. You will be responsible for the day to day running of the Training Yard, while motivating, instructing, and directing the Assistant Trainer as required in a professional, proactive, and positive manner. The role will include the daily care and general yard tasks for a dedicated list of equines.

Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication, coaching and organisational skills and use these skills to support other team members. The successful candidate must have a Level 3 (or above) equine qualification or similar and must be able to demonstrate practical competence and experience in handling and training a variety of horses in different settings, taking into account their individual needs. Ideally, you will have knowledge of the practical application of learning theory (how horses learn), their ethological needs and an in-depth knowledge of horse behaviour and body language.

The Horse Trust is committed to providing high quality, evidenced based training to horses, considering all their needs and working at the individual horse’s own pace to create a positive learning environment. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is happy to work autonomously but is also keen to work in a team environment. This candidate will have the chance to join our highly motivated team in training and retraining and ultimately rehoming equines, including welfare cases.  You will work closely with specialists: including veterinary surgeon, clinical animal behaviourist, farrier, and nutritionists, to continually assess the individual requirements of each equine. This horse centred environment will offer the candidate new experience of the charity sector; it is an exciting time to join our small and diverse team. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be a team player, be open to new ideas and want to continually develop their knowledge and skills.
