Experience with Horses
- I have worked with horses professionally for over eight years, starting in riding schools and later expanding my experience across a variety of settings, including a busy livery yard, two racing yards during my first two years at university, and most recently, a specialist rehabilitation yard (for my placement year at university). I am also currently in my final year of uni studying to become a veterinary physiotherapist, which has further deepened my understanding of equine anatomy, rehabilitation, locomotion and performance. I am confident in handling a wide range of horses, including those on box rest or with complex behavioural or medical needs. At the rehab yard, I was involved in all aspects of recovery work—both in the stable and through groundwork such as long reining and in-hand work, and I also rode as part of structured rehabilitation programmes. I’m competent and efficient at all routine yard duties, including mucking out, turning out/bringing in, feeding etc. I’m well-accustomed to working under pressure and to strict time schedules, having worked at a riding school with around 40 horses and racing yards with up to 60–70 horses in work. These experiences have made me adaptable, efficient, and confident both working independently and as part of a team.
Key Skills
- I have frequently taken sole charge of the yard, which has strengthened my ability to delegate tasks effectively, manage time efficiently, and ensure that all duties are completed to a high standard. I work well both independently and as part of a team, always aiming to maintain a fair and balanced workload across the group. I also spent nine months working on a dedicated rehabilitation yard, where I was involved in all aspects of rehab, both on the ground and in the stable. This included long reining, in-hand work, stable-based therapies (I am currently a student veterinary physiotherapist), and riding as part of rehabilitation programmes. This experience has deepened my understanding of tailored care and training for horses recovering from injury or requiring specialised management.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
- I enjoy how every day is different and brings new challenges due to the nature of the work. I also enjoy how rewarding working with horses can be.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
- I would like to improve certain aspects of my own riding, really getting into the fine details of how to make my riding even cleaner and quieter than it is currently.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
- I’d like to focus more on riding and horse development and progression. I have experience with rehabilitation and groundwork, including lunging and long reining, and would be keen to contribute in those areas. While I’m happy to help with yard duties, I’m looking for a position where my riding skills can be more actively utilised.
• Do you need accommodation?
- No
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
- No
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
- I am currently studying full-time at University so the job would need to offer flexible hours as my schedule isn’t fixed and changes weekly; however, I can work both weekend days
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
- No
