Experience with Horses

Over the past several years, I have had the opportunity to experience working in many aspects of the equine industry, from private livery yards to one of the world’s leading equine welfare charities.

These varied establishments have enabled me to learn so much, often beyond the experiences of the typical groom.  I particularly enjoy working with heavy horses and donkeys as they usually have specific, niche care requirements compared to the average horse.

I am very personable and enjoy building positive relationships with the horses, their owners, other industry professionals, and members of the public.

I am a passionate horseperson.  Being a groom for the equines I have already cared for has motivated me to advocate for their welfare.

I am hard-working and determined to expand my knowledge and find and refine my expertise.

I am reliable.  I am a collaborative team member keen to develop my management skills further to progress in myself and support others.

I worked for the Horse Trust for approximately two years. I was involved with the care and treatment of over 150 residents, ranging from rescued miniature shetlands to retired police, military horses, and donkeys.

Responsibilities included all daily yard chores, assisting vets, farriers, and dentists, administering medications and treatments, carrying out field checks across multiple locations, and documenting changes and progress in the resident’s statistics.

Working in a team was especially important for this job due to the many horses across such a vast area.  It taught me how vital good observation and communication skills are.

At The Horse Trust, I completed the Donkey Sanctuary donkey management training. This course, in particular, was very informative as I had assumed caring for donkeys was the same as any other equine before.

More recently, I was a part of Operation Centaur in the Royal Parks at Hampton Court.  Once trained, I was a trusted member of the Shire driving team.  It took up to 12 public members on carriage rides around the Palace grounds, and the horses were prepared and harnessed to do so safely for everyone.  I also took part in working the land traditionally with the Shires by rolling bracken and cutting hay.

Health and safety and communicating such issues with the public were paramount. In this role, I handled inquiries and complaints from patrons.  This role enabled me to fine-tune my customer service skills, teaching me the importance of empathy and clear communication with people of different backgrounds, needs and expectations.

I also learnt to problem-solve quickly to effectively assess and address individuals’ concerns and needs whilst adhering to policies.

Key Skills

My ability to learn and adapt is a key strength, enabling me to improve my skills and knowledge continuously. I possess a keen eye for recognising subtle changes in a horse’s behaviour or physical condition, allowing me to address any potential issues before they escalate proactively.

 Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Working with horses is an enriching experience that fills me with peace and purpose. The challenges and rewards of training and riding horses foster patience, discipline, and empathy, while their unwavering presence provides solace and tranquillity in an often chaotic world. Working with horses is an ongoing journey of learning and growth, a passion that enriches my life in ways I could never have imagined.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I want to improve my ability to prepare horses for competitions. And general training in hand.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

My multifaceted skillset and unwavering determination set me apart from other job seekers. Furthermore, my strong analytical abilities and keen attention to detail enable me to effectively identify and solve complex problems.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
