Experience with Horses

A rider since I was 4, I have worked in a variety of yards. Starting at an RDA based riding school where I volunteered from the age of 12, progressing to part time paid work from 16 all the way until the age of 18. Where I could I worked freelance, covering shifts at a local dressage yard to gain experience. Aged 18 I moved to Bishop Burton University to study a degree in Equine Sports Science and Coaching which I completed two years of. While studying I had a part time job as a Yard Assistant on the University Yard. Here I gained the experience of working a commercial yard (up to 60 horses) both with a team and with sole charge. In 2023 I left university to work full time as a home and show groom for an Olympic showjumper.

Outside of industry, I have ridden everything, riding school horses, green horses and youngsters, OTTBs, rescue horses as a part of their rehabilitation, all the way up to grand prix level competition horses. I took on an OTTB barely off the track and bought her on to a stage of producing a nice novice dressage test. I bought on a rescue trotter from an emaciated state to a point where she is now a confidence giving hacker and jumps a nice course of decent height. I then moved onto an elderly horse, fittening him up enough to go on to compete at a respectable height for an extra 4 years.

I have experienced, and successfully seen horses through extreme injuries and illnesses. These include but are not limited to strangles, impalements, travelling injuries, internal displacements, as well as the more usual laminitics, colics, cuts-scrapes and grazes.
