Experience with Horses
I am currently running my own embroidry business, but am looking to return, part time to the industy as a groom. My last position was for 5 months, from September 2025-Feb 2026, as a full time groom on a small stud yard in Whitegate, Cheshire. I woeked 3 days a week in sole charge, and 2 days I worked with a part time member of staff in the morning. We had 14 horses stabled and 3 living out, and they varied from in-foal mares, 1 foal, and a mix of 1.5-26 year olds mares, geldings, colts and fillies (no stallions). Prior to that, I was working freelance for a livery yard, professional show jumper and a small race yard, all in Cheshire. I was also employed as a casual groom at Myerscough college in Croxteth for 9 months. I have experience of working with a number of different horses including throughbreds, show jumpers (up to Grand Prix level) of all ages. I have ridden for many years, and had most of my lessons on ex-racehorses in Kenya over 20 months when I lived abroad. I have owned my own horses for the last 8 years, and routinely help friends with their horses prior to that. I am proficient in general yard duties, including mucking out, grooming, tacking up, tack cleaning and cool down post excercise. I have worked with youngsters, and recently backed my own youngster. I have groomed, tacked up, changed rugs, poulticed feet, booked farrier appointments, ordered in bedding supplies, bathed horses, held horses for farriers and vets, made feeds and haynets, applied emergency first aid, tended to general small injuries, helped transport horses. I have long-reined and taught basic manners to my own youngster and have managed horses with colic. At my last yard, I was also lunging young horses prior to them being sent for backing.
Before I worked as a free-lance groom, I volunteered at a local stud farm for a 2-3 hours a week for over 6 months and saw semen collections, insemination of receptive mares. and handled young foals. Previously , I volunteered with the RDA for about 12-18 months.
