Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
In 2006 I did work experience at a riding school for a year. This mainly involved mucking out the stables and poo picking the fields along with grooming the horses and leading them in and out from the field. My partner also has horses so I help her by leading the horses in and out from the field, mucking out their field and keeping the stable yard tidy. I also assist with any repairs such as re-fitting a hay bar, changing a light bulb or fixing a tap as just a few examples. I have ridden a horse a few times and I’m happy to go for a walk but any further this is not something I am confident with. I can use ride on mowers and have previously used a tractor to blecavate pathways. Within my current work position I assist my partner who’s in charge of the smallholding within our place of work. I assist with moving large feed deliveries and leading the pony or donkeys from one field to another when needed.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I excel when working in a team position. I’m a team player, I take direction very well but can also use my initiative to get a task done efficiently and to a high standard. I’m a confident person who likes to help others so I am always seeking ways to support my colleagues. I have a wide range of knowledge from plumbing and electrical skills to ground maintenance, laying a path, building animal housing and repairing fencing.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
As I haven’t worked with horses as such, instead I’d like to share what I enjoy most about horses. I admire their strength and power but also their kind and caring nature and the trust they put in ourselves. Watching them excel at numerous 4/5* events that I have watched and seeing how much they enjoy their ‘job’.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
Although I’d like my role to focus on maintenance, I’d also like to gain more knowledge and confidence when looking after and handling horses.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
For a working couple role, myself and my partner have worked together successfully for the past 7 years. We cover for each other when needed and can plan and organise our job list efficiently. For a maintenance role, I will always go above and beyond utilising my skills of being a handyman as well as extensive experience maintaining grounds. I can work within a team and independently and ensure every job is completed on the day required.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
In my next role I would like to work within a more rural setting and use my skill set to maintain the estate to a high standard. I would like to gain more experience using a tractor and looking after livestock as well as horses.
• Do you need accommodation?
Yes
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
Just our dog but no special requirements
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
No
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
A pre-booked holiday booked from 10th – 26th February
