Experience with Horses

My experience with horses began at a very young age, growing up in a horsey family where it was inevitable that I would pursue a career in the equine industry. I started competing in unaffiliated showing at the age of 4. Later, I studied Equine and Agriculture at college, where I achieved my Level 2 qualification in Horse Care and Riding, as well as my Level 3 in Agriculture and Land Management at Brooksby College in Leicestershire.

During my studies, I gained valuable experience through work placements at a variety of yards, including dealing and sales yards, riding schools, and livery yards. These opportunities helped me develop a strong understanding of horse training and the day-to-day operations of large yards.

Since 2024, I have been working as a freelance professional, caring for multiple clients’ horses and taking sole charge when needed. One of my clients requires my services daily, leaving me responsible for four horses on a regular basis. Although I frequently work independently, I am equally capable of working as part of a team, completing tasks without supervision, or leading a small group of staff when necessary.

Key Skills

  • Working alone
  • Working with others
  • Handling/riding young horses
  • Grooming
  • Tack cleaning
  • Mucking out
  • Ability to spot signs of illness, injury, or distress
  • Basic knowledge of equine first aid
  • Awareness of common equine health issues
  • Knowledge of equine nutrition
  • Time Management and Organization
  • Ability to communicate effectively with owners, trainers, and other staff
  • Strong written and verbal skills for keeping records and updates on horse care
  • Endurance to work long hours in various weather conditions
  • Problem-Solving
  • Safety Awareness
  • Knowledge of Equipment

Strengths and Weaknesses

My strengths include my ability to handle horses on the ground and maintain a calm demeaner in stressful situations, as well as my capacity to take sole charge of the care of multiple horses. I also consider my educational background in agriculture a strength, as it has enhanced my land management skills and broadened my knowledge of animals beyond horses.

In terms of areas for growth, I recognize that my experience in affiliated showing is limited, and show jumping is a discipline where I face challenges. However, I believe my strong flatwork skills, along with my enthusiasm and ability to work with young and green horses, help to offset these weaknesses.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

In my next role, I aim to further develop my skills in training and working with young horses. I am also keen to expand my knowledge of horse breeding, foaling, and foal care. Additionally, I would welcome the opportunity to take on more responsibility, including the chance to take sole charge of multiple horses and potentially oversee other yard staff as well.

• Do you need accommodation?

I do require private accommodation that allows pets, specifically a dog.

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

No.

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

My only ongoing commitments are to my current clients whose horses I care for, so I will need ample time to give them notice and allow them to find a replacement.

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?

No.
