Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

Through out my 13 years of riding and having horses I have ridden at 3 riding schools, participated in pony clubs, volunteered at a riding school for a year and loaned 3 ponies.

One of the ponies i loaned was a 4 year old cob who had only neem backed and ridden in the arena a hand full of times, by the time I had stopped loaning him he was confident in the school at a walk trot and canter and was starting to do some pole work, he was confidant hacking alone and in company and loved to go out on to the moors.

another one of the horses that I loaned was a Welsh d who had only ever done showing then had some time off, by the time I stoppped loaning her we was jumping 1 meter 20 at home and competing at 90cm -1m at local shows.

when I volunteered at the riding school my role was to: turn horses out and bring them in from the fields, changes rugs, groom, lead in lessons, teach the children basic riding, lead pony club groups, exercise the horses, tack cleaning, feed, muck out, hay, hay fields, field checks, set up shows and lead group rides.

I completed a level 2 technical certificate in equine care which was a one year course and I finished this course with a merit in the synoptic assignment, a merit in “keeping horses at grass” assignment, a merit in “ introduction to equine anatomy and physiology”, a destination in health and safety for the land-based industries theory exam, a destination in the equine care theory exam.

Whilst at Duchy college we learnt a lot of things such as: feed and exercise plans, plaiting, equine illnesses, how to bandage, different type of tack, how to lunge, long rein, free jump and much more.

Whilst there we had to complete yard work which consisted of mucking out, hay nets, waters, turning horses out, bringing horses in, grooming, tack cleaning, rug changes, bathing, making feeds and feeding, hosing legs, field checks and hay/ water to fields, putting horses on walker and sweeping the walker. Also we had duty weekends once a month which we would complete the same activity’s. We also had some fun show days where we would prep the horses for the shows and ride in shows.

I have done work experience at 2 different equine facilities, one was in year 10 and I completed 40 hours of work experience as a equine Ltd shop where I handled money, served customers and helped them with choices of bedding and feed, cleaned the shop, took stock orders, ordered stock, refilled the shelves and made eye-catching stands of products at the front of the shop.

At the second facility I completed 56 hours of work experience at a local racing yard. While I was here I  mucked out the horses, gave fresh water, hay, field checks, turning horses out and bringing them in, rugging, small amounts of foal watch, plaiting, grooming, pressure washing the horse box, tack cleaning and learning about different things about racing. At the end of this I got very positive feed back on my work ethic and had a lovely chance to ride one of the horses who was racing that weekend!

I have helped retrain a friends off the track race horses.
