Experience with Horses
I have good experience with horses and I have worked with them for about 3 to 4 years, my experience is mainly working with them from the ground, I can ride but I’m not a strong rider as not had the opportunity to maintain this over the last 3 years. When working with them I have been doing the usual yard jobs (mucking out, skipping out, grooming and cleaning tack) I have worked with difficult and some very highly strung horses, particularly when doing work experiences at a stud , my confidence with them has grown over the years and I am always up for a challenge and hard work.
My experience and knowledge with horses has come from working at riding schools as a stable hand and a private livery yard, after I gained more confidence I studied at Hartpury college on the level 3 extended diploma horse management 2 year course leaving with D*D*D*, and studying a 3 year equine science course at Hartpury University leaving with a 2.2.
Key Skills
My key skills are, self discipline, with the ability to self manage along with working within a team, I’m very good at understanding horses Quick but thorough at mucking out and general yard work, when working with horses I’m good at plaiting and I’m best with working with the horses from the ground as I have had limited experience with riding even though I am very capable. I have had limited experience with clipping due to not having the opportunities but with more practice I will be capable. I can handle highly strung horses from the ground I have had little experience with handling stallions but I feel confident enough around them.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love being around horses and working alongside them as they make the best teammate, and you can never have a bad day with a horse! I find them mesmerising and love getting the best out of horses as well as watching them enjoy their work. As much as we help horses learn and improve they in turn do the same for us. Working with horses also enables me to be outside. I thrive on hard work and I am always up for a challenge.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
Over the past 3 years studying at Hartpury University I haven’t managed to keep up with my riding as well as hands on experience with working with horses, I have recently left a Dairy Farm and would love to get back into the equine industry, as my passion lies with horses! As I’m not a strong rider and I enjoy riding, I would like to improve this as when working with horses it’s a very useful skill to have. I would also like to work on my clipping skills, as well as plaiting and making the horse look presentable.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I have the determination to learn and improve and I always believe there are ways to make myself better, I am a quick learner and good at working within a team as well as working on my own steam. I’m a reliable and punctual worker and horses feel relaxed around me, I have a calm , firm but fair nature. I respect all horses and look after each and every one as if they were my own. I understand the importance of high standards and if these standards drop it not only reflects badly on the business but also has negative effects of horses and their wellbeing.
