Experience with Horses
I’ve been working in the equine industry for the last 6 years and I’ve been around horses for the last 12 years of my life. Most recently in the industry I’ve spent over a year in a high level event yard. This has given some experience in taking on a more management like role, ordering things for the yard, organising the farrier, physio and vet, communicating between various groups on the yard and managing tasks on the yard that need to be done. It also allowed me to gain some further experience with hacking out, lunging, doing fitness work on the gallops, managing sick and injured horses, tidying and plaiting horses for competitions, packing for competitions, grooming at competitions and general day to day yard duties. Previous to this, I spent 3 months in Florida at a show jumping and sales which also allowed me to gain exposure to what goes in behind importing, producing and selling horses. I also have experience working in a racing and pre-training stables back in Australia, where I was able to watch horses begin the handling and breaking process, as well as actively attending the track and strapping at the races. I was also a stable hand at a dressage stables. I have two horses of my own, which are both ex-racehorses, who I’ve competed to in novice dressage and 95cm eventing and 1.05 show jumping back in Australia. I also obtained my pony club C* certificate. Currently I’m beginning to work todays earning my equinology equine body workers certification. Throughout working these jobs, I have also gain experience house sitting, pet sitting dogs, cats and chickens, babysitting and tutoring a 10 year old. While I am Australian, I hold a British passport so I’m fully eligible to work in the UK.
Key Skills
I’m very capable of working by myself and being in sole charge but I can also easily adapt to working within a team. I can plait, trim/pull, lunge, bandage and muck out to a high standard and I’m thorough with my equine first aid. I’m capable of babysitting, house sitting and pet sitting, as well as other skills like problem solving and dealing with numbers.
Strengths and Weaknesses
I love the variety to day to day life that working with horses bring. Being able to learn each horses unique personality, likes, dislikes and their needs makes working with extremely rewarding, especially when you can use this to gain the best out the horse and for the horse. Being able to form strong connections with the horses and team you work with is just another bonus.
I would like to be able to perfect my show turnout to the highest of standards as well as perfecting my clipping when possible. I would like the opportunity to learn to groom at international competitions aswell. I would like to take the opportunities to become a better horseman and expand my knowledge of horse management in all areas.
I’m an extremely hard worker and always walk around the yard with a smile no matter the time of day or weather. I’m a firm believer that you work with horses for the love of horses and being a groom isn’t just a job but rather a lifestyle. I always aim to work to the best of my ability and pride myself in delivering a high standard of work and care. I’m always open to feedback, advice and knowledge which I can guarantee I’ll take on to raise the standard on my work and care.
Requirements
Ideally I would be offered a 5 or 5 and 1/2 work week and have the opportunity to groom at shows. Accommodation is not required, however if the right job is further than 45mins away from my current location it may be required for a few nights a week.
