Experience with Horses
I have over a decade of hands-on experience with horses, having developed my passion from a young age and continually seeking opportunities to progress. Over the past year, I have dedicated myself to furthering my skills through volunteering and student positions, gaining valuable practical experience in a variety of settings.
My expertise covers all aspects of groundwork and fundamental horse care, complemented by advanced knowledge where needed. I am a confident, competent rider with a particular interest in working with young horses for sales, contributing to their ridden education, and beginning to compete. I approach each horse as a partner, aiming to bring out the best in them while continuing to grow and refine my own abilities.
I bring enthusiasm, dedication, and a genuine love for horses to every role, and I am eager to contribute my skills to a team that values both the welfare of the horse and the rider’s ongoing development. I take a sensitive, patient and empathetic but firm approach when dealing with all kinds of horses, no matter age or sex and I always make sure to put the horse first.
Key Skills
- riding – flatwork, pole work, jumping, riding young horses (with a basic level of education already, NOT freshly backed), hacking
- lunging – using a variety of different lunging aids as well as being well versed on their purposes
- turning out to a high standard (still need to get the hang of plaiting though…)
- horse care – attention to detail, walking in hand, grooming, holding for vet/farrier/dentist/insemination, loading
- handling young horses – partaking in their early education, teaching groundwork and basic manners (post being backed and ridden, NOT colts or fillies)
- assisting at shows – acting as a groom, making sure clients have everything they need and providing moral and practical support
- general yard duties – feeding, mucking out, washing, rugging etc
- sole charge – currently handling a yard of 30 horses, feeding& supplements, haying, exercising, turning out
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
Riding/groundwork when you can see your efforts really paying off when a horse learns a new skill that you’ve taught them
When you get to know a horse well and find out all the spots that they love being scratched in
That feeling when you’ve had a really great ride and feel on top of the world and give your horse loads of cuddles and kisses for being so good
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to to improve my knowledge and create a structured approach towards training horses and how to create an individual training plan based on their fitness, goals, nutrition, competition eligibility etc.
I would also really like to gain some showjumping competition experience – this is important to me when searching for jobs and I would like a job that allows me to compete
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am the hardest and most dedicated worker you’ll ever meet. I have been through tough times in this industry and haven’t quit. I have endless amounts of passion and potential and will be incredibly loyal to the right employer, one who can provide me opportunities to succeed and fulfil my own goals, as well as meeting their hiring needs.
