– Bought race horses back into work from summer off which include hacking, schooling and jumping them in the school for the first time
I started working with horses from a young age as when I stared going to lessons at a riding school I would stay behind for the day to help out with tacking other horses and ponies up, turning out, mucking out, filling hay nets and lead-rein in some lessons
I then moved onto a loan pony at a stud yard Where I rode lots of different mares, gelding and stations. A long with backing or bringing horses on. I worked with foals – going to SPSS shows and stallion Gradings. With the pony I loan I competed in tetrathlons, dressage, showjumping and one day events and did really well on her
alongside riding my loan pony I got a Sunday job which grew into a 8 year relationship with the yard owner with my last year being a full time solo manager. this job stared out doing general yard duties to getting the horses ready to go hunting and then to doing completion grooming through the summer where we went to working hunter classes and showjumping competitions. I covered maternity leave one winter which I hunted throughout. My last year has consisted of riding race horses – getting them fairly fit and strong before they go back into training for the winter of hurdling. This included hacking, schooling and going on the race course itself. In this time I’ve done all the yard work by myself and have been left to run the yard and ride the horses when the owner has gone away.
Going back to my loan pony – I had for 6 years and before going into my 3rd year of uni I have her up to focus on my studies. I then found a dressage horse to ride for one year which was lots on fun. After finishing uni I found an ex race horse which is my current horse I rode now. I compete in dressage, a bit of sj and ODEs. It’s been lots of run bringing him on and training him to do what he does now – I think he’s got a lot more to give
I went to Nottingham Trent University (brackenhurst) for college and higher education where I did an equine sports science degree and came out with a 2:1.
I then also worked at Brack as an equine technician for 2 years. In this time I really learnt about time management and organisation skills. Welfare of the horses was top priority at Brack but I also got to gain new skills with working with the students, stock control and updating data systems. I started and someone gave full practical lectures, rode with the students and gave them pointers, showed HE students how to use technical equipment which then could use in the dissertation and helped first hand with their data collection
