Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been riding regularly for 13 years, I am confident in all paces and can jump as well as some XC. Whilst completing my degree (BSc(Hons) Equine Science), I have been working on a Welsh Pony stud. At this stud, I have been handling highly strung broodmares, stallions, youngsters and foals. This job involves a variety of tasks including: feeding, mucking out, turnout, grooming, covering, semen collection, show prep, wound management, administering of medication, lead training for foals, trailer loading practice, assisting the farrier and vet.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I pride myself on my ability to remain calm in difficult situations – whether that is a stallion proving difficult during live covering or a foal being stubborn during leading! The horses at my current job are semi feral and not always the easiest to handle but I am capable of dealing with most surprises they throw my way in a calm manner. I enjoy working with others and fit well into a team but can work on my own if need be, I’m equally happy with both!
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love the variety in the work, and the satisfaction I get from seeing horses I’ve raised and worked with thrive and be successful is something I can’t imagine getting from any other job.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to gain more varied experience in the industry and I’d like to be more involved in the backing and training of horses. I’d also like to work on my turnout for shows, such as learning to clip to a high standard.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I’m always eager to learn and expand on what my degree has taught me, as well as put it to use in the wider industry.
