Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been studying at Doncaster Equine College since September 2025, working towards a level 1 diploma in horse care. At the college, I worked with different horses every day, whether it’s of the track thoroughbreds, or cobs, I have learned the basics of taking care of a horse, as well as the health and safely of doing so.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I find I can work well either independently or as part of a team, when whichever best fits. I am quite an approachable pupil as I find many of my classmates often come to me for advice or to answer their questions. As for the other tasks listed in the question, my skills in those departments are still developing and may need more work, for example, I have attempted plaiting a couple of times but have not yet mastered the technique, as for clipping, I have watched it be done, but have never performed the task myself. I have turned out on numerous occasions but never in a show environment, all of the horses at college are past the age of 15 and we also do not have any stallions so my experience with working with younger horses and /or stallions is quite vague. As for my non-equine skills, I have a few months experience as a cleaner, and I have also had a few trials in the hospitality industry at a few cafes.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I find that I enjoy ground work the most. Whether it’s leading or grooming, it gives me comfort. I can be quite an anxious person at times, and can sometimes get overwhelmed and stressed, but as soon as I’m working 1 – 1 with a horse, it helps me to calm down, and its nice to just talk to them, even if they can’t understand. I do enjoy riding a bit as well, I hope to get better in that department and build my confidence to be able to push myself to do more and improve.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to improve on my confidence some more, as well as my knowledge on taking care of horses. When it comes to my confidence, I can sometimes doubt myself, even when I am doing something correctly. As for my knowledge, I’d like to expand on what I know, whilst also being to help others with their own struggles when it comes to caring for horses.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
Despite my low knowledge on the care of horses, I am prepared to give what it takes in order to be given the opportunity to work with such amazing animals. I take pride in my work constantly, and I’m always looking for feedback on how I can improve to make myself a better worker.
