Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have spent the majority of my working years in horse racing yards, where I would work with both very young or older horses, riding them up the gallops daily, schooling (over hurdles), and riding work. I have experience with managing small teams of staff, liaising with senior members of staff about the welfare of horses, and younger members of staff’s queries and concerns. I have attended sales and researched sales information on a time limit. Travelled to and from races both for daily and overnight outings.
I have a level 2 racing coach qualification in which I used to; educate young members of staff starting their careers, for a pony racing camp at The National Horseracing College coaching 11-14 year olds, and also coaching a few children who showed an interest in the horse racing industry coaching them both under saddle, and taking them for an outing to a racing yard, gallops, and Wetherby racecourse.
In terms of other equine experience I worked for an eventer whom competed at BE80-BE100, hacking, flat schooling, and general care of a range of different horses, receiving coaching myself from her and her coach. Despite the coaching I am aware my flat schooling could still use a lot of work, I do however have the basics to educate horses on a range of techniques.
I do also have experience working at an equine hospital, both doing yard work, and a few months of nursing where I assisted vets and other nurses in simple procedures, lameness assessments, imagining, and surgery.
My current freelance is predominantly yard based work, and poo picking for livery yard owners, an eventer, leisure horses, and friends.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I can work well in a team, but I do really enjoy working alone. I am good at plaiting and turning out for shows, and races, and have won best turned out on race days on multiple occasions. I am patient with horses who may be a little tricky in character or younger horses who need a little extra help or guidance. I am also good at cleaning, tidying, and organising.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love riding and watching horses develop and improve over time. My favourite time with horses is at the end of the day seeing them content in their clean stables, eating their feed and hay nets, looking at a tidy yard, it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to improve my schooling knowledge, and self confidence in my ability. I have spent a little bit of time away from horses while on maternity leave, so I may be a bit rusty in some areas, but I have found with the freelance work, that confidence is coming back.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am a fast learner, always organised, I plan ahead, but can also think on my feet. I have a good work ethic. I am always willing to learn new things and be educated, but my familiarity with horses is like second nature, my gut feelings are often correct when it comes to handling a situation that might be difficult, or diagnosing something that may need extra work, a vet, a farrier, or specialist care.
