Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have over twenty years of experience in the horse industry. While my background is primarily dressage (groom, with a bit of teaching thrown in for good measure!) I’m looking to make the leap to vetmed. I take great pride in keeping a clean and safe environment for the horses in my care and am able to work quickly while maintaining high attention to detail. In addition to the daily tasks required to attend to horses’ wellbeing, I have experience monitoring for signs of pain and illness, restraining for vet/farrier/dentist visits, and providing surgical aftercare including wound cleaning, IM/oral/ophthalmic medication, and structured physical rehabilitation. I have hands-on experience responding to colic, punctures/lacerations, and broken bones, and have held multiple horses for euthanasia. I am confident in handling all variety of horses, including babies, stallions, sporthorses, and those exhibiting fractious behaviors. I am particularly passionate about senior/end-of-life care and have a knack for helping owners navigate those difficult times with calm and
compassion.

I function well under pressure, excel at staying calm in a crisis, and I’m always ready to pitch in and help with coverage or extra duties. I am well-organized, technologically savvy, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. (I enjoy interacting with owners, not just their animals!)

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I have strong horse handling skills, hold myself to high standard, and work well alone and as part of a team. I am good at monitoring for illness/injury and can calmly and confidently administer first aid. I can wrap/bandage, dispense medication, and safely restrain horses for procedures. I’m comfortable jogging, lungeing, and riding a variety of horses. And I’m never above mucking out stalls!

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Everything! I have been involved in horses since I was a child and can’t imagine them not being part of my life. I love how it’s such a journey and you’re constantly learning and developing and how each day brings a chance to make things just a little bit better.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would love to expand my vet nursing skills.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

With over 20 years of experience in the equine industry, I possess strong horse handling skills, maturity, and a clear commitment to horses. I
