Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have a wide range of experience working with horses across both competition and livery environments. I’ve worked in busy dressage and showjumping yards as well as riding schools and livery yards, and I’m confident with all aspects of horse care and yard management.
My experience includes riding and schooling horses from young horses through to more established competition horses, as well as lunging, long-reining, hacking, and breaking and backing, and handling stallions, broodmares and foals. Alongside this, I carry out all general yard duties to a high standard, including feeding, mucking out, turnout, and grooming, as well as clipping, plaiting, trimming, and bandaging.
I also have several years’ experience managing yards, including organising staff, planning daily routines, dealing with clients, and coordinating vet and farrier visits. I’ve been involved in running competitions, lessons, and events, and I’m confident working in busy environments where excellent organisation and communication are important.
In addition, I’ve used social media across multiple roles to promote yards, competitions, lessons, and horses, helping to engage clients and attract new business.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I’m particularly good at keeping a yard organised and running smoothly, especially in busy environments. I’m confident working both independently and as part of a team, and I’m used to taking responsibility and getting on with jobs without needing supervision.
I am confident riding and handling a range of horses, including young horses and stallions, and carrying out schooling, lunging, and general exercise. I have a strong knowledge of general horse care and turnout, including clipping, plaiting, trimming, and bandaging, and I take pride in keeping horses looking well and cared for.
I’m also good with people and comfortable dealing with clients, organising day-to-day routines, and managing staff. I’m practical, reliable, and good at staying calm, especially under pressure, to get things done in a busy equestrian environment.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
What I enjoy most is how varied the days are as no two days are ever the same, and I like being busy and hands-on. I enjoy working with different types of horses and seeing them improve over time, whether that’s through schooling or just keeping them happy and in good condition.
I also really enjoy the yard side of things—having everything organised, horses looking well, and the day running properly. There’s a lot of satisfaction in a yard that’s running smoothly. I like working with people as well, both staff and clients, and being part of a yard where there’s excellent standards and a good atmosphere.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
My riding, I believe that every day is a learning day and I believe there’s always room to learn and improve. I’m keen to develop my skills further, gain more experience with different horses, and continue learning from other riders and trainers. I enjoy challenging myself and building on what I know, so I can always work more effectively with the horses in my care.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
Employers should consider me because I combine hands-on experience with strong organisational and management skills. I’ve worked in busy yards for many years, managing day-to-day operations, overseeing staff, and working directly with clients, while maintaining high standards of horse care and yard management.
I’m practical, reliable, and used to taking responsibility, but I also enjoy working with people and creating a positive, professional environment. I’m confident, adaptable, and have experience across a range of horses, from young horses to stallions, as well as promoting yards through social media to help attract and engage clients.
I take pride in what I do and am motivated to contribute to a yard that runs efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards
