Experience with Horses
I began horse riding when I was eight years old, and went on to loan several different horses throughout my teen years. I then gained further knowledge of equine husbandry, welfare & nutrition throughout my Level 3 Animal Management course.
I completed a 4 year Veterinary Physiotherapy degree at ARU, in which I completed OSCE exams on correct equine handling, health assessments, treatment, rehabilitation & anatomy. I also gained an understanding of common equine pathologies, injuries & surgeries.
Since I qualified, I’ve been working as an equine groom for six horses living on a private yard. My roles have included mucking out, feeding, riding, grooming, clipping, bathing, administering medication and providing physiotherapy before and after competitions.
Key Skills
- Happy to work alone or independently
- Excellent health assessment skills
- Effective in treating equine musculoskeletal issues with massage, stretching, remedial exercise and electrotherapy (Red laser therapy, Pulse magnetic therapy & TENS)
- Certified in kinesiology taping both horse & rider
- Confident handling horses with varying ages & temperaments
- Basic clipping & plaiting skills
- Competent rider able to both school & hack in all paces
- Confident lunging & long-reining
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I most enjoy being able to create a bond and trust with the horses I work with, and how rewarding it is to see them progress in their rehabilitation, fitness & competitions.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’m eager to expand my knowledge in the equine competition industry, particularly as a vet physio – supporting equine athletes is of particular interest to me.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
My physiotherapy background and knowledge allows me care for horses in a way most grooms can’t. I can provide regular full musculoskeletal assessments, rehabilitation and strength & conditioning – in addition to all other elements of equine husbandry.
I’m also very eager to gain further knowledge and experience, particularly in show preparation and/or foal handling.
