Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have been involved with horses for over 15 years, beginning riding in approx. 2009, progressing to loaning various horses from 2013, and becoming a horse owner in 2017.

My experience spans both riding school and livery yard environments, where I have developed a strong foundation in horse care, handling, riding, and yard management. Alongside owning my own horse, I completed work experience at my current yard and volunteered within a riding school as part of my loan agreement, assisting with lessons and daily yard duties.

As a horse owner, I have taken responsibility for every aspect of my horse’s care, management, and development. One of my proudest achievements has been transforming my own horse from a nervous, green youngster into a confident, bombproof horse who is now often described as a schoolmaster and all-rounder. This experience taught me patience, consistency, adaptability, and the importance of building trust, confidence, and bonds with horses.

I am confident carrying out all routine horse care duties, including stable management, feeding, grooming, tack maintenance, turnout, travelling, competition preparation, health monitoring, and welfare management. I also have practical experience managing laminitis with my horse, including dietary control, weight management, soaked hay, restricted grazing, and fitness planning. I am also knowledgable in injury rehab and welfare improvement after injury, as my horse had his eye surgically removed after experiencing uveitis for over a year.

I have handled and helped exercise a wide variety of horses, from 12hh ponies to 17.2hh horses, including strong, nervous, green, forward-going, and challenging horses. I am competent lunging independently and understand the importance of safe, effective groundwork as part of a horse’s education and fitness programme.

My riding experience includes flatwork, schooling, hacking, cross-country, dressage, one-day events, and showjumping which was what I primarily competed in. I have competed successfully in the Pony Club I used to be a part of, and unaffiliated competitions, including competing up to 1.15m and qualifying for the Pony Club Dengie Winter Showjumping Championships, as an example.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

  • Confident handling and riding horses of any age, size, and temperament
  • Experience managing laminitic horses
  • Plaiting, bandaging, rugging, bathing and turnout for shows
  • Lunging and groundwork
  • Safe loading in trailers and boxes
  • Showjumping horses with various levels of confidence
  • Confident hacking alone and in groups
  • Able to remain calm, effective, and reassuring under pressure
  • Strong and enthusiastic work ethic and attention to detail
  • Works equally well independently and as part of a team
  • Quick learner with a genuine passion for improvement
  • Stable and field maintenance
  • Welfare improvement after injury (a personal example being the surgical removal of my horses eye)

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

What I enjoy most working with horses is building a partnership and bond with each individual horse and helping them grow in confidence, ability, and welfare. Every horse is different, which is something I love about working with them. I particularly enjoy seeing progress over time, whether that’s improving a horse’s confidence, developing their training, or simply ensuring they are happy, healthy, and receiving the highest standard of care. Knowing that my work directly contributes to a horse’s wellbeing is incredibly rewarding and motivating.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I believe there is always more to learn in the equestrian industry, regardless of experience level. So, I am keen to continue developing my knowledge and experience through practical experience, particularly in horse management, training, and care as a professional practice. I want to actively seek opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and expand my skill set.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I offer a combination of extensive practical experience, genuine dedication, and a lifelong passion for horses. Horses have been a central part of my life for over 15 years, and I am seeking opportunities to learn, improve, and take on responsibility. I am also young, fit, and healthy with no other obligations I am tied to. I also have a drivers license and a car, so I am more than happy driving to the job, which also makes it easier and more reliable in case of emergencies or last minute situations.

I understand the realities and expectations of horse ownership and daily management. I have cared for horses through injuries, health challenges, training setbacks, competitions, and everyday yard life. I am reliable, hardworking, calm under pressure and still remain reassuring and empathetic if so, and committed to maintaining high standards of horse welfare.

One of my greatest strengths is my ability to adapt to different horses and situations, on the ground or while riding. Whether working with a nervous youngster, a strong competition horse, or assisting beginner riders, I approach every task with patience, confidence, and professionalism. I am highly motivated, eager to learn, and genuinely invested in providing the very best care for every horse I work with.
