Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I began my equine experience at age 10/11, beginning riding and quickly learning basic horse care and yard management at this yard. Progressed to a yard of a higher practice and welfare standard where I continued riding and learnt more horse husbandry skills, rode, engaged in pony club activities, small competitions and volunteered once a week. From there I was able to take up part-ownership of a horse, I competed in dressage up to novice level, I also did jumping and cross country with him for fun. He now has complex rehabilitation management needs following some ailments which included a lot of long reining and hand walking now back to ‘full work’.

I then took on a degree at Hartpury in Equine Performance and Rehabilitation where we had to complete extensive practical modules alongside un depth content with the school horses each year. This included lunging, long reining and application of other rehabilitation techniques such as balance pads, slalom poles and dynamic mobilisation exercises. We also measured performance with the latest equipment for optimisation. We also had to undertake in total 650 hours of placement, part of which I spent in a veterinay practice going out with vets and assisting with in clinic horses. The other at a pre training racing and Rehabilitation yard, where I handled young horses and very fit competition horses.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

– Monitoring and measuring of performance for improvement

– Deep knowledge regarding rehabilitation protocols and being able to effectively provide them. Good ability in recognising pain signals early and reporting this. Good ability to recognise individual horse needs and adapt my behaviour to theirs to keep arousal levels low.

– Competent and quiet rider, good at schooling, hacking and handling unknown horses.

– Ability to work alone or as a team as shown through roles in hospitality.

– Good with computers and technology.

– Detail orientated and good at noticing things that need to be done.

– Can turn out to a good standard.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Companionship, attending to their needs, ensuring they are as happy as they can be. The rural setting and routine of care.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

There are always things to learn and improve on in regards to horses, perhaps deeper knowledge into practical yard management of larger/specialist yards. Veterinary knowledge.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

  • I am an enthusiastic and dedicated candidate, with  horse welfare being a top priority. I am very detail orientated and take initiative to get things done in a timely manner. I’m very honest and genuinely enjoying looking after and spending time with horses. I also enjoy interacting with others and like providing a warm and friendly environment when in customer facing roles. I have a lot of varied experience through my degree and would love to apply what I have learnt to make a difference to animals and the businesses that they are involved with. I am excited to enter properly into the industry and show what I have to offer.
