Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
My interest in horses began at a young age through riding, which developed into a passion for the thoroughbred industry. While studying in college, I assisted with my first foaling, an experience that sparked my interest in breeding and confirmed it as the career I wanted to pursue. I got offered an internship at Watership Down Stud upon completing my degree and have since completed three foaling seasons and gained experience in yearling preparation and sales, building a strong foundation in all aspects of stud work
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
- Experienced in working independently, managing mares during the pre-foaling period and maintaining a high standard of care throughout long shifts.
- Confident making observations and recognising changes in equine health and behaviour, with a proactive approach to reporting concerns.
- Strong team player with experience working collaboratively during busy yearling preparation and sales seasons to meet deadlines and maintain presentation standards.
- Adaptable and able to perform effectively in both independent and team-based environments.
- Calm, patient and confident handling Thoroughbred mares, foals and youngstock.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced stud environment.
- Committed to maintaining high standards of horse welfare, stable management and workplace safety.
- Reliable, hardworking and willing to take initiative while following established stud protocols.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
Is being involved in every stage of a horse’s development. From caring for mares before foaling, assisting with the birth, then watching the foal grow and develop, and finally seeing it presented and sold as a yearling, I find it incredibly rewarding to contribute to each stage of that journey.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
While I have always enjoyed the practical, hands-on nature of working on the yard, I am keen to continue developing my knowledge of the wider stud operation by gaining experience in an office-based environment. I would welcome the opportunity to build my administrative skills while using my practical understanding of the industry to support the wider team.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
Employers should consider me because I bring a strong combination of practical stud experience, dedication and a genuine passion for the thoroughbred breeding industry. Having worked across Ireland, England and Australia, I have gained valuable experience in different stud environments, from independent foaling units to commercial yearling preparation and sales operations.
I am reliable, hardworking and able to take responsibility, whether working independently with mares during busy foaling periods or contributing as part of a team during high-pressure sales preparation. I am committed to maintaining high standards of horse welfare and presentation, while continuing to develop my skills and progress within the industry.
I believe my willingness to learn, strong work ethic and hands-on understanding of the breeding process allow me to make a valuable contribution to any stud team.
