Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have owned and ridden horses from a young age and hold BHS Stage 3 Riding and Management, completed at Wellington Riding. I also have several years of professional experience working as an equine groom, including freelance work in polo and private yards. My experience includes general horse care, yard duties, preparing horses for lessons, competitions and general riding, monitoring welfare, and working both independently and as part of a team.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc.

• Confident carrying out day-to-day horse care and general yard duties
• Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Reliable and comfortable taking responsibility for completing work without close supervision
• Experience preparing and turning out horses for polo, eventing and hunting
• Good awareness of horse welfare and changes in condition or behavior
• Experience working across different private and professional yard environments
• Able to adapt to different horses, routines and ways of working
• Experience of equine first aid
• Good organisation and time management
• Physically fit and comfortable with practical outdoor work in all weather conditions

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I most enjoy the practical and rewarding nature of working with horses, particularly being responsible for maintaining high standards of care, welfare and management. I also value the opportunity to work closely with individual horses, understand their needs and contribute positively to their health, wellbeing and performance.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

Having spent the last few years concentrating on my university studies, I would like to refresh some of my practical skills and regain experience of working in a busy yard environment full-time. I am also keen to continue learning and broaden my experience by working with different horses and within different areas of the industry.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I can offer a combination of previous professional equine experience, a strong work ethic and the maturity and transferable skills I have developed through completing my degrees. I already understand the physical demands, early starts and responsibility involved in working with horses, so I have realistic expectations of the industry.

My previous freelance experience has made me adaptable and comfortable working independently, while I am equally happy working as part of a team. I take horse welfare seriously, am reliable and conscientious, and would be keen to become a long-term, dependable member of the right yard.
