Experience with Horses
I have been “working” at two different yards with riding as a reward- not official jobs but I have been there to help with the work. I started riding at 8 years old and ever since that I have taken every chance to be around horses. I have had loan horses and I have been at a riding school and a horse sales yard. At the sales yard I helped to film the advertisement videos and schooled the horses. have done all the everyday stable tasks and I have lived the everyday life at a riding school and the sales yard. I have been involved in producing and breaking ponies in. I have been the first person to sit on a horse and to teach them the basics. I have worked with many different horses, some have been very new to the human touch and I have been desensitising them. I have ridden horses that are being brought back to work, horses that are in full work, horses that have been partly retired, horses that are very green and horses that need loads of time to trust. I know how to adjust depending on the needs of the horse. I can get any horse to carry themselves properly when riding and ride them on the bit. I have a stable seat and soft hands. I have hacked, schooled, groundworked, jumped, evented and done pretty much everything. But I have mostly ridden small ponies and inexperienced horses so the chances of jumping high or doing high level dressage been limited. I have sat on a horse at their first time doing things such as low level/practise competitions, cross country, hacking, jumping etc. I have jumped up to a meter. I haven’t competed much, I have attended a few flat shows and practice competitions. I have also lunged countless of times and done other basic groundwork.
Key Skills
I am good at working independently or with a team. I have good time management and ability to work in stressful situations. I would say my strongest skill with horses is building a strong trust and connection with them and providing their everyday routines and lives. I am great on the ground with horses. I am very precise with my cleaning or when brushing a horse. I have good knowledge of horse equipment. I have strong work ethic, adaptability and inner strength. I have excellent social skills and I am good with children as well.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love how every day is different as well as each horse is its own unique character. I believe every horse has something to teach you and you can always learn more and do something better. That kind of constant challenge and tension keeps me happy and motivated. I think it’s the best feeling in the world when you start noticing a horse trusts you. I enjoy every possible moment spent with horses and every yard chore as-well. I feel like I belong to the stable, no matter what my job is there, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I am more of a do person and I love to keep myself busy so that also makes working with horses feel like my thing.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would love to learn even more about young horses and traumatised, difficult, rescued or otherwise “problematic” horses- even though I believe no horse is a problem, sometimes they just need more time, patience, attention and understanding. My ultimate goal is to be able to work with any kind of horses, even the most difficult ones.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am very hardworking and precise- every job gets done meticulously. I learn new skills easily and fast. I adapt quickly to new or unexpected situations and circumstances. When it comes to challenges or obstacles on the way, I take them as opportunities and new possibilities to learn, do better and grow. I face any challenges bravely and I am not afraid of unfamiliar things, I am always happy to learn more and study new approaches or techniques. I am open to any opportunity and learning experience- if you never try you will never know. I am independent, responsible, flexible positive and committed worker. I am eager to contribute positively on the team and to help with anything. It is natural for me to be hardworking and to care deeply about the animals and people that surround me. I also have brilliant social skills.
