Experience with Horses
I studied at Sparsholt College, gaining a Level 3 Diploma in Equine Management, passing with an overall distinction. (Sept ‘17 – May ‘18)
My first job was at Westcourt Stables, Witheford Equine (Gary Witheford) dealing with problematic racehorses. The main coverage was starting stalls, although we dealt with any behavioural issues including loading, ridden work, mounting, breaking and training. I learnt first hand natural horsemanship and the importance of pressure and release.
I’ve dealt with colts, fillies, stallions and some of the most difficult horses. I rode some restarters and broke horses in from the ground. I started youngsters tacking up, and first time lunging and long reigning.
My second job was on a small stud, not so much a business as it was a hobby for the lady. Even so, I worked with pregnant mares, foals, colts and fillies.
Key Skills
Taking sole charge, working alone, extreme attention to detail, working with others, clipping, plaiting, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, fencing, hedge-trimming, strimming, dealing with troubled horses.
Strengths and Weaknesses
I love working with horses because it’s so rewarding. Most horses love to work and looking after them I believe is a privilege, because they always give 110% back.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to expand my knowledge of horses, I’ve been so lucky with the jobs I’ve been working, but I’ve been quite blinkered to studs or racehorses.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I believe they should consider me because I’m an extremely hard worker, I put all my effort into my work and I’m proud to look back on it.
