Experience with Horses
Currently working as a rider/ groom at small eventing stud producing young horses primarily for eventing. Prior to this I have worked in the horse industry for over twenty years from riding out on racing yards, working with hunters, point to pointers and event horses to studwork. Long reining, lunging, backing and breaking, riding away and schooling. Competing – dressage (up to elementary), eventing (up to Novice) showjumping (newcomers) and teamchasing. Riding work on the gallops and schooling racehorses. Grooming at events and at the races, transporting competition horses, mares and foals and yearlings. Foaling and covering mares, handling youngstock and stallions. Yearling and foal sales.
Key Skills
Can work alone using initiative or within a team. Happy to take sole charge or follow instructions. Can manage other staff and train them. Can clip, plait, pull manes/ tails. Exercise all types and break young horses. Can foal mares and use own initiative/ experience and liase with other professionals to treat injuries and illnesses and create rehabilitation/treatment programmes. Can bandage, apply dressings, give medications including intramuscular injections. Currently in charge of the producing and training of the young horses at the stud I work on.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Horses are my passion and my life, it can be cold and wet and there are lots of downs but its a very rewarding way of life. I am eager to keep learning and improving and the horses are always my priority – their needs come first. I certainly don’t know everything but have always got my ears and eyes open to take new things on board.
My weaknesses would definitely to be to try and be less of a perfectionst. I am quite hard on myself and struggle to recognise things I have actually done well!
Requirements
I would like to eventually be producing young horses as a career – backing them, schooling, taking in problem horses for schooling, and eventually gaining competition rides. I am currently learning to produce a huge variety of horses but I want to progress my competing experience and build on my experience. I work hard and am happy to do anything but I want to keep learning improving to be the best rider I can be, I will sit on the greenest, quirkiest horses but I do want to be able to learn from it and gain valuable experience.
I would ideally like to bring my own horse along as part of the package and get training on her to improve my riding and continue to climb the eventing ladder with her. But she has been at local yards in the past and I am more than happy for that to happen. I would also need accommodation, I am happy to live out but the wage would need to reflect this as I would be relocating, and ideally allow 1 small well behaved dog and 2 cats.
