Experience with Horses
I have been riding for 17 years now and I have owned horses for around 10 years now.
In terms of experience I have worked as a groom (live-in and live-out) at various yards in Scotland as well as working as a riding counselor at Camp Romaca in Massachusetts.
I am confident working as sole charge of a yard or as part of a team and I am currently looking for a groom job with immediate start of possible.
Key Skills
I have a fair bit of experience working with young, green horses including breaking in the pony I currently own and ride.
I also have a knack for sorting out horses with behavioural issues. My nickname as a child was “crash test dummy” because I’ll get on anything and stay on. The horses we use at camp are often bought unviewed from auction so there are often a lot of undisclosed bad habits that need straightened out before we let the 6 year olds get on, so that’s definitely one of my strengths.
I pride myself on my cleaning and mucking out skills. I love to keep a yard looking immaculate and I try to put 110% into every task as I am a but of a perfectionist.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love the different bond you build with every horse. Some feel like your baby, some a best pal and some an arch nemesis that you secretly love regardless.
Working with horses is definitely a form of therapy for me, it keeps me sane.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would love to improve my riding on a technical level as I haven’t reached the level I am aiming for yet with things such as dressage and eventing.
I would also love to improve my equine first aid knowledge as it is something I find fascinating and it can really come in handy.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I think employers should take into consideration my absolute love and passion for both the sport and the animals.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
I would like to gain some experience as a competition groom.
• Do you need accommodation?
If located outside of the central belt ideally yes.
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
Livery for my own two horses would be handy but not a deal-breaker requirement at all.
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
Not at the moment.
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
No
