Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I am an experienced groom having worked for a family run point to point yard for several years in the past. The yard also stabled the local hunt horses and young competition horses. My position required me to undertake all yard duties including mucking out, grooming and turning out horses for hunting and racing. Riding daily it was my responsibility to ensure the horses were brought up to fitness and kept fit throughout the season. Care of the horses including being vigilant for any injuries or potential issues with the horses was also part of my role, including attending to minor ailments and injuries under the supervision of the owners and or vets when necessary. Attending veterinary, farrier and dentist visits was also included in my role. I would regularly be trusted to take sole charge of the yard whilst the owners were away at events or on holiday.
As I am a lightweight rider I am able to ride ponies as well as horses and would prefer a job that includes riding as well as yard duties. I am happy to work as part of a team or take soul charge as and when necesessary.
Working as a ride escort in the New Forest I exercised my people skills with the public taking tourists of all ages and abilities on rides and ensuring their enjoyment and safety at all times whilst ensuring the comfort and safety of the horses at the same time.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
My main areas of expertise are working as part of a team or equally sole charge. I have good people skills enabling me to engage with and support people of all ages and in varied roles. I am a skilled yard worker with a self motivated hard working approach. I am experienced in and enjoy mucking out, grooming and turning out horses for hunting or showing and exercising horses. I am proficient in driving a 7.5 tonne lorry and have had some experience grooming for carriage driving which I enjoyed immensely.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love everything about being around horses, being outdoors all of the time regardless of the weather, the physical exercise the work provides (no need to visit the gym). The fun and excitement of attending events and taking part if the opportunity arises. It is always a privilege to work with horses and be able to earn a living from being with them as they are my main passion in life. There is never a day when I am not passionately involved and feeling so fortunate to be at work when my job involves horses. The bond that develops over time with each horse gives me a real sense of fulfillment and enjoyment. Seeing a new horse settle into the herd or a horse departing to a new home is very rewarding. In short, it is my ideal dream job and the best I have ever done!
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
Yes, I would like to develop more skills both on the ground and in my riding. Referring back to the above I enjoy the fact that there is always more to learn and endless disciplines and opportunities to improve in the world of horses.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
My varied skills and experience both with horses and people make me a dynamic and flexible all round candidate, hard working, honest and reliable and willing to expand my skills and knowledge further.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
In my next job I would like to be a reliable, trustworthy employee carrying out yard work, exercise horses and any other duties required in the role whilst gaining more knowledge and experience as available. I would like to ensure the confidence of my employer that their horses will be safe, well manged and cared for to the highest standard whilst inmy care.
