Experience with Horses
I have over 16 years of hands-on experience caring for horses across private yards, professional stables, my aunt’s horses, and client-owned horses, including those belonging to CEOs and other owners. My expertise encompasses comprehensive horse care, including grooming, feeding, riding, mucking out, stable management, turnout, long reining, and general yard operations. I have cared for a wide variety of horses, including stallions, mares, ponies, and youngstock, across multiple breeds and sizes such as Warmbloods, Drafts, and lighter horses. Growing up surrounded by horses and animals has fuelled my lifelong passion, and my extensive experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of equine welfare, yard management, and the ability to handle horses safely and confidently in diverse environments, including competition preparation, veterinary care, and sole-charge responsibilities.
Key Skills
I excel in several areas related to horse care:
- Equine Care Expertise & Welfare: Extensive knowledge of horse health and welfare, including feeding, grooming, hydration, monitoring well-being, and providing care for sick or recovering horses.
- Stable & Yard Management: Experienced in managing busy yards and stables, mucking out, maintaining clean and safe environments, and ensuring smooth daily operations. Skilled in overseeing supplies and logistics, including stocking feed, bedding, and equipment efficiently.
- Exercise & Training: Proficient in exercising horses through long reining, hacks, turnout, riding for training purposes, and leading horses safely to the horse walker or across varied terrain, including hills and large properties.
- Handling & Stallion Experience: Expertise in handling and leading horses of all types and temperaments, including stallions, mares, ponies, and youngstock. Skilled in preparing horses for competitions, grooming, plaiting, pulling, trimming, and turnout-ready presentation.
- Tack & Equipment Maintenance: Proficient in maintaining and caring for saddles, bridles, and all tack and equipment, including thorough cleaning, correct fitting, and ensuring everything is safe and in good working condition.
- Driving & Yard Logistics: Experienced in driving vehicles on private properties to support yard operations, distributing feed, assisting with general yard tasks, and loading and unloading horses from trailers safely and efficiently.
- Sole Charge & Teamwork: Capable of taking sole charge of multiple horses (up to four at a time) while collaborating effectively with staff to prioritise tasks and maintain the highest standards of care.
- Groundsman Work & Multi-Animal Care: Skilled in maintaining yards and grounds, including field upkeep, managing security and gates, and caring for additional animals such as cats, dogs, goats, and chickens.
- Medical & First Aid Skills: Administering minor first aid, bandaging, and monitoring horses during veterinary visits or recovery periods.
- Competition & Show Preparation: Grooming, plaiting, pulling, trimming, and turning out horses to the highest standard for competitions and shows.
- Professional Attributes: Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, reliability, adaptability, effective communication, time management, and the ability to prioritise tasks to ensure smooth yard operations and excellent horse care.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
What I most enjoy about working with horses is simply being around them. I love the energy and presence of horses, and there’s a special joy in caring for them and seeing them happy and healthy. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong connection with each horse I work with, and it’s incredibly rewarding to know that my care and attention directly contribute to their well being and comfort.
