Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have experience observing horse/animal behaviour and producing an ethogram. Other than this I have no official horse experience, however, in my mid teens two friends and I came across three abandoned horses and tried our best to care for them while we waited for help, the horses remained on the field fr some time before help arrived, in that time we fed, watered, and did some very basic grooming. Of course we named them and spent lots of time with them, at one point we managed to get sugar cubes for them as a treat, the colt got a little too excited over this and started bucking, one of bucks connected with my backside, I was fine after a bit of resting, I became more cautious around the colt when he would start getting excited and pay extra attention to the horses behaviour if I went near their rear ends, however, that experience didn’t deter me at all.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
My skills predominantly come from my personality, punctuality and reliability is an important quality to me, as well as, my dedication and hardwork earning me my Animal Management Technician’s Award in college. I pour my heart into what I do, which can leave me feeling burnt out, but even then I continue because all I want is to care for animals/horses and be a valuable member of a team/establishment. I’m a team player, thriving in group settings and when working alone, in addition to this, I strive for effective and clear communication, I do not want to leave someone or be left guessing, confusion and misunderstandings creates accidents. I have great listening skills as I want to ensure everyone’s voice is heard and respected. I find it easy to be flexible and adapt to situations that call for it even if I do prefer scheduals. I persevere even when I’m intimidated by a task/situation. My integrity gives me the confidence to advocate for the welfare and well-being of the animal. Sometimes my self-awareness causes me to overthink, however it also allows for me to understand my strengths and areas for growth, as well as take extra precautions to prevent accidents. And when the situation demands it, I step up as a team leader, I enjoy giving advice and teaching others the practical skills I have developed. I love practical, outdoor work, getting wet and muddy, even dealing with manure, If it’s messy I’ll handle it and most likely enjoy it.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I enjoy working with large animals, to me, it feels much more fulfilling and rewarding, as well as my general passion for them. They’re amazing, the way they move and interact with the world and others, their intruiging personalities, and the variety of different breeds with their own history and strengths.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to develop my initiative, being confident when making choices that affect others/animals has always been something I’ve struggled with, but I know that with enough training and knowledge I can achieve this goal. I would also like to improve my physical fitness, I am fully capable of carrying out tasks but I would like to build up my stamina and strength.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
Within the last year I have volunteered at an animal Sanctuary, I have been complimented on my reliability, passion, and resiliance, among other similar areas, I have demonstrated to other volunteers that I am helpful, useful, and that they can count on me. I will always put the animals Welfare rights and well-being above all else, as well as, the safety of my colleagues. I am motivated in Physical horse/animal related work, I love the outdoors and working with my hands, muck and manure don’t phase me. I prefer clear and straightforward communication, I want to be effective and work well with my team, however I also work extremely well alone as long as I know exactly What I’m doing.
