Experience with Horses

I currently work part time as a groom  on a professional show jumping yard near Holmes Chapel,  2 afternoons on a small race yard and as a casual groom at Myerscough college in Croxteth. I  have experience of working with a number of different horses including throughbreds and show jumpers (up to Grand Prix level). I have ridden for many years, and had most of my lessons on ex-racehorses in Kenya over 20 months when I lived abroad.  I have owned my own horses for the last 8 years, and routinely help friends with their horses prior to that. I am proficient in general yard duties, including mucking out, grooming, tacking up, tack cleaning and cool. . I have worked with youngsters, and recently backed my own youngster. I have poulticed feet, booked farrier appointments, ordered in bedding supplies, bathed horses and tended to general small injuries. I have long-reined and taught basic manners to my own youngster and have managed a horse with colic.

I volunteered at a local stud farm for a 2-3 hours a week for over 6 months and saw semen collections, insemination of receptive mares.  and handled young foals. Previously , I volunteered with the RDA for about 12-18 months.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses? I love the connection you can achieve. I love feeling them relax when I get it right for them and am communicating well with them. I enjoy trying to figure out what works best to help them learn and I get a huge amount of peace being around them

• Is there anything you’d like to improve? I would like to achieve more formal understanding of horse anatomy/ physiology and behaviour and possible move in to more rehab type environment or work with youngsters.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker? I can bring a huge amount of transferable practical and soft skills to any yard. I’m kind, put the horses needs first, have a fabulous work ethic and am diligent and honest.
