Experience with Horses

Part-Time Equine Groom, Tictoc Eventing – June 2024 – Present

During the week, I work varied shifts for Abi Boulton, where I look after a range of horses, from her top eventing horses to yearlings. I work independently where I complete all daily tasks, but also have to make quick decisions if there are any changes. Tasks include mucking out, turning out, feeding, taking on and off the walker, etc. This has been a significant insight into how professional yards are run, and I have very high standards for keeping horse competition fit. I am also used to a varied work schedule as I am always on hand for last-minute shifts due to changed training schedules.

Equestrian Shop Assistant, Eland Lodge – March 2022 – August 2024

As a shop assistant, I learn how the business runs and how stock is managed and processed. I also support a range of customers purchasing equestrian products. I am usually on a closing shift, so I can independently cash up and understand how to deal with cash and the financial aspect of retail. I have also had several training days with brands like Ariat, Carr Day, and Martin regarding the features and benefits of their products.

Key Skills

Competent in working with competition and young horses, can work independently and well with various ages and experiences.

I always ensure horses are well turned out for shows, e.g. equal plaits, white socks, clean tail, quarter marks when needed, etc.

I am trustworthy because I am frequently left alone in the yard. I am also on time for my shifts and will put myself forward for cover.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I enjoy being able to look after a wide range of characteristics from each horse as I can learn more from each horse. I enjoy being included in the training because I watch horses complete milestones and become stronger and more talented as they go up the levels.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to improve my grooming experience at more significant competitions because I don’t have opportunities to travel with the horses.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I always go above and beyond to ensure all horses are comfortable and happy, no matter how long the job takes. I am hardworking and organised and ensure all tasks are completed as efficiently.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
