Experience with Horses

I currently work as a freelance groom taking sole charge on a full livery yard as well as working on a private yard for a couple. I’m left on my own a majority of the time and always use my initiative to do more work and make sure everything is finished to a high standard. I have been working as a freelance groom for 2 years now and have previously worked on private event yards and also worked around mares, foals and stallions.

I have been around horses from the age of about 4 with my grandfather working on a event yard (privately owned). I then volunteered at a riding school on my weekends when I was in school. I have completed my Level 3 equine management course.

I helped on a rescue yard where I helped access each horse coming in (many were complicated ex racehorses) and was given the opportunity to bring some of them on to then be able to find their forever homes.

Key Skills

I am very used to working alone, I take pride in my work and aim to achieve the best that I can and make sure each horse is taken care of for their individual needs. I currently have an apprentice which I am teaching along side work as well. I can work in a team listening to everyone’s ideas and adjusting to different peoples way of working.
I am confident with clipping, plaiting and turning out for shows. I am always accepting feedback and am fond of being able to learn more and new tricks which may help me.
From experience I can do book work, as well as arranging appointments from vet visits to farrier appointments, speaking to feed specialists.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

that each horse is different and has their own personality. Adapting my knowledge to be able to understand each horse

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

Always looking at improving everything, mainly my plaiting but also just any general knowledge

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I’m a hard working individual who for the past year and a half has devoted nearly 7 days a week to working on yards. No job is too small but I’m also very adaptable to different roles

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

More experience with different horses and just being in a different environment.

• Do you need accommodation?

Yes

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

I have a nearly 1 year old springer spaniel, I also have a horse however that can be discussed if she comes with me or not

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

No

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?

No
