Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I started my equestrian career in a busy riding school a little over 3 years ago. My main responsibilities were:
• Maintaining stables (mucking/skipping out, bedding down)
• Turning out and bringing in from the field, caring for horses living out in the field
• Preparing feeds, adding medicines and supplements when/if needed
• Providing food and water for horses (filling up haynets, making sure water buckets are clean)
• Ensuring there’s enough grazing and haylage in the field
• Keeping allocated areas tidy (tack room, feed room and storage areas)
• Keeping the yard safe and tidy in line with health and safety regulations
• Grooming and rugging horses
• Monitoring the condition of horses and reporting any problems
• Identifying and treating minor injuries/wounds, changing dressing and poultice
• Caring for horse tack (cleaning and conditioning, etc)
• Tacking up/untacking horses, getting them ready for lessons and hacks
• Leading hacks and occasionally teaching beginner riders (up to canter)
I currently am working at a small livery yard where my responsibilities are very similar to the above except that I don’t teach but I’m regularly riding, exercising horses, taking sole charge of the yard on the weekends and managing 2 young helpers.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I have a basic knowledge of equine first aid (identifying and treating minor injuries, bandage, poultice, injections etc)
Experience in working with various breeds and ages ranging from foals to retired/senior horses.
Some experience with show prep (traditional gypsy cob)
Caring for horses with long term health issues such as canker and CPL
I’m happy to work alone but I’m also a team player
I have over 2 years of experience in managing a small team in a fast paced, multicultural work environment
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I enjoy getting to know them and building a bond. I love taking care of them, making sure they’re happy and healthy. I especially enjoy working with the ones who need a little bit more attention, care and love.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
Would like to improve on my confidence in handling green horses and learn to break them in
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am passionate about broadening my knowledge of caring for horses, I am enthusiastic, hard working and I always take a horse centred approach. I am very eager to learn and experience more in this industry and I always approach horses (and every animal) with compassion, respect and kindness
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
Would love to learn more about breaking in young horses, showing and improve my riding
• Do you need accommodation?
Yes, I do
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
I have a 14 year old senior cat, she’s been with me for 12 years, she’s an absolute angel, she’s not destroying furniture etc
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
I am currently working at a livery yard, requiring at least 2 weeks of notice
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
No, I don’t
