Experience with Horses
I started riding at around 10 years old and have ever since had regular lessons or access to loan horses/own horses. I got my first loan pony at 12, having this opportunity gave me the knowledge of what it is to care and look after a horse aswell as having that extra time to improve my own riding. In between school and having my loan pony i got work experience at a riding school which taught me the fast pace in which you have to work to keep up with everything a large number and variety of horses need. Fast forward a few years and at 16 I got two horses of my own. One of which was a purebred KWPN who taught me how to handle and ride a horse who knows his job and fine tune my skills. The other was an Irish Draught X, this horse when i first got him was extremely scared and couldn’t grasp what was being asked of him under saddle. I restarted him from the ground up and although it took some time 2 years later he was schooling beautifully and had even started to jump. I then moved away to college where I completed my Level 3 Dimploma in Equine Management at Bishop Burton. This taught me a lot in the sense of Equine Rehabilitation, behaviour, biology and more, aswell as coaching and grass management. After I left college I got a job on a small family run livery and dressage yard, where some days I would work sole charge or as a team. I completed the general duties aswell as exercising and handling some of the Grand Prix horses. After this I moved home and bought a 7 year old thoroughbred, who came with a whole host of problems and weaknesses. After a very gruelling 6 months of rehabilitation and fitness work he was under saddle working away. Fastforward a year we are now headed for Arena Uk in July to ESUK championships. In the past few months I also started my first coaching job part time, where I am bringing on different varieties of riders from very novice riders to more capable, some with some learning difficulties and issues too.
Key Skills
My best skill at present would probably be leadership and team work, this is due to my current job as a supervisor, where a lot of my week is spent managing a team for an ever growing company. Another skill I hold highly is my pride in appearance of my work, especially within the equine industry, I like to have everything clean, tidy and neat. This included my beds, the yard itself, that all items are put away correctly, and also the horses themselves.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
The thing I enjoy most about working with horses is the sense of purpose it gives you. Not only are you working on yourself and towards your own goals, but you are also helping to bring out the best, and strongest version of them.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would definitely like to improve my clipping skills, although I have clipped before, I havent done it very often or regularly.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I feel employers should consider me over others simply due to the fact I have an incredibly strong mindset, this means I reach goals when they are asked of me, and even when issues and problems arise, I am able to deal with them in a collected manner and find a resolve.
Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
I would like to go more into a Showjumping background, or retraining. These are two areas that particularly interest me, and I would like to go into it as a job.
• Do you need accommodation?
If i were to move away from home yes I would need accommodation, however if it is within travelling distance no.
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
No I do not
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
I currently have a horse and dog aswell as 2 jobs, however my full time job is what I wish to leave to gain an equine job.
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
I am away on holiday for 2 weeks at the start of July, and also for 3 days at the end of July for ESUK championships.
