Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

Equine-Based Freelance Services:

Looking for live out role in Surrey/West Sussex RH14/Dunsfold area.

I have over 20 years of hands-on experience working with horses across various settings, including livery yards, private stables, and competition environments. My work has included daily yard duties (mucking out, feeding, turning out/bringing in), exercising and schooling horses (flatwork and hacking), grooming to competition standard, and basic first aid. I’m confident handling all types of horses, from youngsters to competition horses, and I pride myself on being reliable, efficient, and calm under pressure.

I also provide stable management, and help at shows. I have passed my BHS exams, including in breeding and equine management, and I own my own transport.

Admin/Non-Yard Freelance Work:

I have a strong background in administrative support, with experience in roles involving scheduling, customer service, data entry, and document management. I’m proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and various CRM systems. I have excellent organisational skills, a strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.

Whether supporting small equestrian businesses or working in a more general office-based setting, I bring a professional and adaptable approach to every role. I’m open to remote admin roles as well as part-time in-person work, depending on the needs of the business.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I’m particularly good at working both independently and as part of a team. I’m confident in taking initiative and managing tasks on my own, but I also work well with others, especially in busy yard environments where clear communication and teamwork are essential.

Equine-specific skills I excel at include:

  • Clipping and plaiting to a high standard, suitable for competitions and shows

  • Turning out horses to a professional standard, including bathing, grooming, and tack cleaning

  • Handling youngsters with patience and confidence, including groundwork and basic schooling

  • Exercising and hacking, including fit competition horses and green rides

  • Handling stallions and more sensitive horses with a calm, capable approach

Non-equine skills include strong time management, organisation, and a proactive work ethic. I’m also comfortable with admin tasks such as booking appointments, managing schedules, and basic record keeping—particularly useful in private or competition yard settings.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I most enjoy building a bond with each horse and understanding their individual personalities. There’s something really rewarding about earning a horse’s trust and seeing the difference good, consistent care makes, whether that’s in their performance, behaviour, or general well-being. I also enjoy the variety of the work, being outdoors, and the sense of responsibility that comes with caring for animals.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I’m always looking to improve my riding technique, especially when it comes to schooling more advanced movements or bringing on young horses. I’d also like to continue building my knowledge of equine nutrition and rehabilitation so I can offer more informed care, especially for horses with specific needs.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I’m dependable, hardworking, and genuinely care about the horses I look after. I don’t cut corners, and I take pride in doing a job thoroughly and to a high standard. I bring a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and plenty of hands-on experience across different types of yards and horses. I’m also adaptable and calm under pressure, whether that’s handling a tricky youngster, prepping for a competition, or managing a busy day on the yard.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

In my next job, I’d like to continue developing my practical skills, particularly in areas like schooling different types of horses, show preparation, and possibly gaining more experience with young horses or stallions if the opportunity arises. I’m also keen to work in an environment where I can be part of a supportive, professional team that values high standards of care.

Longer term, I’d love to build on my experience by taking on more responsibility, whether that’s in stable management, mentoring newer staff, or supporting with training and exercise programs. I’m always open to learning and would appreciate a role where there’s room to grow, gain new qualifications, and contribute meaningfully to a well-run yard.

• Do you need accommodation?
