Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I’ve had regular hands-on experience caring for my family’s young Appaloosa filly. I’ve been involved with her from a young age, so I’ve learned to be calm and consistent when handling horses. I’ve done daily mucking out, grooming, feeding, and keeping the yard clean and safe. I’m confident leading her, noticing changes in her behaviour, and sticking to a routine. This has taught me a lot about responsibility, patience, and being safety-aware around animals.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
- Confident handling of young horses – comfortable around horses, calm and patient in all situations
- Mucking out and stable maintenance – used to physical work and keeping areas clean and safe
- Grooming and daily care – hands-on experience brushing, feeding, watering, and checking condition
- Reliable and hardworking – always show up ready to work, even early mornings or in bad weather
- Quick learner – pick up new routines and follow instructions well
- Safety aware – understand the importance of calm behaviour and clear handling around horses
- Good observation – notice changes in behaviour, mood, or condition
- Positive attitude – enthusiastic, respectful, and willing to help out with any yard jobs
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
Strengths
- Hardworking and reliable – I always turn up ready to work and take pride in doing the job properly, whether it’s mucking out, grooming, or just keeping the yard tidy.
- Confident around horses – I’ve grown up helping with our filly, so I know how to stay calm and patient, especially with younger horses who need consistency.
- Quick learner – I pick things up fast, especially hands-on tasks, and I don’t need to be told twice once I understand the routine.
- Safety-conscious – I know how important it is to stay aware around horses and to follow yard rules to keep everyone safe.
- Physically fit and focused – I don’t mind hard, physical work and I keep going even in cold or wet weather.
Weaknesses- Lack of formal yard experience – Most of my horse experience is with our own horse, not in a professional yard yet. But I’m really keen to gain that and ready to learn everything I can.
- Perfectionist with routines – I like to get things exactly right, which can make me take a bit longer when learning new tasks, but I always want to do my best.
- Quiet at first – I can be a bit shy when I first start somewhere new, but once I feel comfortable, I communicate well and enjoy being part of a team.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to improve my experience in a professional yard setting. Most of my experience has been with my family’s horse, so I’m really looking forward to learning from experienced staff, working with different types of horses, and building my confidence even more in a busy, structured environment. I’m open to feedback and always ready to improve.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I might not have formal yard experience yet, but I have real hands-on experience caring for our own young Appaloosa filly—so I know what it means to work hard, stay calm around horses, and show up every day no matter the weather. I’m reliable, respectful, and not afraid to get stuck into any job that needs doing. I’m also eager to learn and prove myself in a professional environment. You won’t have to chase me or explain things twice—I’m ready to listen, work, and give 100%.
