Experience with Horses
When I was 5 I started horse riding at my local riding school, over the past 14 years I have ridden approximately 70 different horses. I now compete in show jumping up to 85cm, and in dressage up to novice level.
I have sat through pretty much every experience on a horse, from bucks, bronks, and rears, to bolts, refusals and dead stops. I used to work at the riding school (for 3 years) so I have a lot of experience with misbehaving horses, whether it’s biting or kicking.
I am very competent at tacking up, mucking out, turning out, catching from the field, making feeds, giving hay, making hay nets.
Currently, I have a loan horse, Iolo, who I look after 3 days a week , he loves a good rear, and has provided me with ample experience out hacking on the roads, and my favourite thing to do with him would be bareback, whether it’s jumping, galloping or just a casual walk. I am also currently helping a friend school their newly broken 6 year old, Murphy, who’s 12.1hh, and I will also begin to help her with schooling her new 4 year old in the coming months. This demonstrates the fact I ride horses from 4 to 25 years old and from 12.1hh to 17.1hh.
The riding school I attend also holds competitions regularly, so I’ve been competing for 13 years, and have won over 270 rosettes. On a competition day you’ll find me working a multitude of jobs, including; judging low level show jumping; organising competitors; calling dressage tests; coaching kids through jump-off courses; teaching parents how competitions work and how they are ran.
Key Skills
I am particularly good at plaiting tails and forelocks, as I used to compete in the Pony Club Blue Cross Horse and Pony Care competition, and plaiting was easily my favourite part, I’d go up the yard for hours a few days a week to practice, in the lead up. Other key skills I possess would be working alone, working under pressure, delegating jobs effectively and prioritising workload.
As a part time job I work as a receptionist, so I am also very good at admin work, answering phone calls, dealing with customers face to face, operating a till, moving bookings, inducting new receptionists. I am also always looking for ways to improve on efficiency, finding shortcuts and loop holes, to maximise customer satisfaction.
One key skill which I possess would be my mathematical ability, I have an A* in my maths a level, and have completed my further maths a level (result pending), I also have won many academic awards in school, as I have always been top of my year in maths.
Strengths and Weaknesses
I enjoy most about working with horses, the feeling of companionship with a horse, getting know all their quirks, and learning how to ride each individual horse properly. I find adapting to a new horse truly takes so much time and effort, but is so rewarding in the end.
I really want to get out competing, as since COVID the competitions at the riding school are sparce, I really miss being able to compete once a week, instead competing every few months. I want to start jumping higher, and get back to jumping the faster horses rather than the ones who are still learning, not that I don’t enjoy that part because I do, but I miss riding those who love to jump. I also want to improve my technical flatwork skills, I regularly practice leg yielding, shoulder in, haunches in, turn about the forehand, progressive and regressive transitions.
I also think the thing that would make me stand apart from other applicants is purely the fact of how many different kinds of horses I can ride; school masters; newly broken; 12.1hh; 17.1hh; horses who love to misbehave; horses who love to show jump. Not only that but also my care and compassion, I will always try my best to put the horse’s welfare above all else.
Requirements
In my next job I would like to gain experience travelling to shows, competing and being around more competition horses.
I will require accommodation.
I don’t own any pets or my own horse. However if the job included looking after/training any dogs that would be a big bonus, as I owned dogs for 16 years.
The only on-going commitments I currently have is to my loan horse and my friend I’m helping school her horse.
