Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have always been around horses for as long as I can remember, my mum bought my first pony, Glimmer, when I was just 3 years old after loaning a Shetland for a while she realised I would fall in love with horses just like she did. Glimmer at the time was only a yearling himself so he had a lot of growing up and learning to do. When I outgrew little Glimmer, who is still in the family now, my mum started to search for a new pony for me and after a couple loan ponies found a rescue pony from HAPPA called Queenie. Queenie was difficult to begin with but she came around with lots of love!

Being around horses and animals made me want to pursue it as a career to which I first did my L2 Certificate for Animal Nursing Assistants and then moved onto my L3 Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management. During my time in college I got a job working at HAPPA on the yard, this involves the routine care, exercising and yard maintenance for all rescued equines at HAPPA. HAPPA is an equine rescue in which our aims are to rescue, rehabilitate, rehome and educate.
In the past year I also bought an ex racehorse to bring on myself, we have had a few health related problems on the way but hoping to get back to her training as soon as possible!

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

Although I am happy to work alone, I also have very good people skills and can work well in a team. At HAPPA we are open to the public and work within a team to ensure all equines are cared for. I have also worked in hospitality so believe my people skills are good.

I have also worked with a wide range of horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes. I’m not afraid of working with the younger horses either.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I love the job satisfaction from working with horses. Knowing that they are cared for to the best of my ability and are working to the best of their ability!

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to improve my plaiting up skills, this is something I haven’t had chance to practice too much.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I have worked with a wide range of horses already, most that have had traumas in their life. I have dealt with many ailments as well as this due to the nature of the horses I work with.
