Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I grew up in a farming/equine household. My parents and grandparents all kept horses, cattle & sheep. I attended the Westmeath Pony Club and hunted with the Longford Harriers. I competed successfully to 145m with Show Jumping Ireland and competed in the young horse classes with Eventing Ireland. I was selected and attended the Show Jumping Ireland elite junior riders training clinic and shortlisted for the European Young Rider Team. I worked with Susan McDonal in a professional eventing yard producing young event horses. Notably, “Paulank Brockagh” who went on to win a bronze medal at the London Olympics. I also worked with Mel Clancy and his wife Anne Gannon in a dealing/young horse production yard. This yard most recently produced and sold the Paris Olympic horse, “James Khan Cruise”. I spent a 6 month period with Martin Lynch, Middleton Park Racing Stables. This yard done the simple thing right, everyday. During my time here, “Oscar Time” came second in the English Grand National. I completed the Equine Foundation Degree course at Enniskillen Campus. I passed all my courses and attained my FDSc Certification. I also attended Teagasc Mountbellew where I completed and attained my Green Cert Qualifications. I went away from horses and farming for a number of years to try working in other sectors. Most recently I worked on the Castleforbes Estate, Newtownforbes, Co. Longford.  This is an 1800 acer Estate with approx. 50 horses. 6 breeding mares, 2 breeding stallions, young stock and retired competition horses. It was my job to break and ride the 3 and 4 year old horses in the mornings and herd cattle (approx. 500 cattle at all times), do maintenance, machinery operator in the afternoons. I was also the driver bringing mares to and from vet/stud or competition horses to Fethard equine clinic.

I also keep 6 mares of my own and 1 stallion. I store the foals to 3 years old and then produce them for sale. My 3 year olds have regularly been selected for the Monart Event Horse Sale.

Had experience with: Back/Break, Bandage, Broodmares, Clip, Compete, Equine First Aid, Exercise/Hack Out, Foaling/Foal Watch, Long Rein, Lunging, Maintenance Skills, Management Skills, Muck Out, Plait, Pull Mane/Tail, Ride, Rider/Trainer, Sales Preparation, Show Turnout, Sole charge, Stallion Handling, Supervisory Skills, Work Rider, Young Stock Handler, Young Stock Rider, Travelling Horses by Sea or Air
Administration, Computer Skills, Management Skills, Sales/Marketing, Supervisory Skills, Groundsman, Estate Management

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I am very good at showing/presenting horses for sale, selection days or shows, having them in enough body condition, well handled/trained for the occasion and immaculately turned out.

I can work as part of a team and also as an individual. I can delegate tasks to others while also keeping on top of my own work load.

I’m very good at clipping & plaiting. Handling, training and breaking young horses. I also have several years experience with stallions, covering naturally and on the dummy.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I really enjoy breeding horses. Selecting a stallion, hoping he’s a good match for your mare, arrival of the foal, getting to know the foals characteristics and watching that foal grow into a mature horse and hopefully having a successful sporting career.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

Time management. I think I can get more done each day. I can’t stand laziness.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I’m honest and reliable. I always show up fit and ready to work.
