None

Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have had horses for 30 years, my Mother ran a yard when I was younger and then had another place when I was in my late teens, which I helped run for the better part of 5 years, this was a livery and riding school yard, my duties covered everything from basic equine care, mucking out, feeding, turning out, water, bedding, keeping the yard tidying, turning out, grooming etc to teaching on the weekends, group hacks out and one to one lessons. I also had to organise the weeks/months ahead, farrier and vet/vaccine bookings, any physios sessions and fittings that may need looking at for certain horses. I also learned to do basic medical procedures , poulticing and cleaning minor cuts and wounds, treating and looking out for lameness and injury. Furthermore, kept the diary in order so we knew who needed what on each day, filing out orders and supplies to be delivered on time.

Then I worked on a showjumping yard for a couple of years in Weatherby, this included much of the same duties, mucking to, feeding, keeping the yard tidying, tacking up, working the horses, cleaning tack etc. I also travelled with them abroad to many shows where I would continue with the basic duties and also help prepare them and the horses for the shows, plaiting up, tacking up, grooming, making sure their equipment was clean and ready.

During Covid I worked on a livery yard which again included the same basic duties as stated above, this had to be to BHS standard as they were approved by them.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I am very good at working alone, once I know what is expected of me I will just go about my duties and will ask if any other extra bits need doing during the day. I plan my day out carefully, sticking to a routine that works for the horses, myself and the yards needs to ensure important duties are a priority. I have full experience with plaiting and getting horses show ready within a show jumping industry however can turn out for other industry standard as well (can provide plaiting pictures if requested)

I’ve ridden all manner of different level of horses , from experienced to very green to backing youngsters, my current horse in an newly ex-racer that I am bringing on to regular work and my other was a project horse that was very green when I got him 10 years ago, now works in the riding school at my current yard.

I am passionate and motivated, I like to put my all into my job and come out proud of my work every day. I love learning, I’m always willing to be shown new things and new ways, increasing my knowledge of the industry and horses is something I always strive to do.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Every day is a new challenge and each horse is so different you get to learn so much from them, I have been around them all my life they are part of it in every way. I love being outside in nature, riding and being around horses is soothing and calming, they genuinely make me happy. There’s s special bond and trust with horses that’s extremely rewarding, especially when they make improvements and succeed, something that you helped with, it’s a feeling like no other. The confidence and patience you learn to adapt with them and being active and outdoors all the time.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

My knowledge of the industry, I strive to always learn more and pick up new information that I may not already know, learn more about different feed options, riding and in hand techniques etc. I always wish to improve on my ridding skills, I feel this is something that I will always work on no matter what.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I am self motivated and passionate, I will always push myself to be better and learn more in my spare time. I want to be around horses as much as possible and will often put in more time than requested simply because I love being there. I work hard and will form bonds with all animals, I will love them like my own and treat them as such. I want to learn, I will ask questions if needs be and I will listen.
