Experience with Horses

My name is Kailey and I am a seventeen year old veterinary care student. Even though I have been in and out of various veterinary practices since February this year, through riding and taking care of the horses I have realised that I would like to venture into the equine industry and develop my skill set further.

As I said before, I have had previous experience in veterinary practices—two of which actually do equine and farm—and have had riding experience. My riding school also offers a helpers club where you can assist in all manner of horse care—from mucking out and grooming them, to leading the horses around and making sure the students are happy with their horse. Of course, these horses are desensitised and thus they are pretty well behaved, but I feel I would be confident to work with a horse at any level in their journey.

Key Skills

I am a very flexible person and there is not much I am unwilling to try. I have always tried my utmost to meet all employers expectations and comply with everything asked of me—I believe this stems from my want to learn and be the best I can at my job. Further, I am confident with animals, having spent my whole childhood around them—horses are lovely, full of personality, emphatic animals and I do not believe there could be one I wouldn’t love working with.

Otherwise I feel (and have been told) that my skills in writing, customer service and communication are above average. I am a personable individual who values the relationships between clients AND workmates.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses? — How human they are. I think they are the closest to understanding how we work as humans, and the opportunity to build a strong relationship is always there with a horse.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve? — Handling and riding, I’d like to be properly trained to work with them.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker? — I may not be as qualified as other candidates, but that is not always paramount when it comes down to it. What IS important is somebody’s love for the industry and the animals they work with, which is something I value above all else. There is not much I do not believe I couldn’t be taught under the right guidance.
